SPAM - from DAVIDZ at evolutionm.net
It looks like we'll implement a minimum post count to email users. This should help prevent future spam registrations as they'll have to post on the forums before they can even attempt to spam. We're also going to add an email flood check so a user can only email through the site every x seconds. These updates should help prevent any future spam issues.

Ok, flood check and minimum post count features are in place. You now need to have at least 5 posts before you can email another member and you can send no more than 1 email per 30 seconds. Hope this helps the situation!

VBulletins is the most popular commercial forum application, it was only a matter of time before they figured out how to use it to spam. I use PHPBB2 which is similar.. That app also has similar issues with spammers.. KK's changes will curb it if not eliminate it since posts are the one thing you can't fake (and not be detected quickly)
