Same here.. someone apparently figured out how to automate a login and use the mail form in an automated manner..
The forum app I use PHPBB also had this problem, the only solution for us was to use a registration tool similar to what Yahoo does which uses a GIF image with a distorted word on it that you have to type in.. It prevents a robot from registering... Unfortunately once their registered they can still e-mail..
The main thing is this application is one of the most widely used forum apps.. which means it was worthwhile for someone to write a spamming program to scrape a userlist, and then post directly to the mail form. (I used to prevent this by only allowing form pages to load if the referrer link was from my site, the only issue is that with a custom robot app, you can make the referrer say whatever you want)
