I'm assuming your referring to threads in OT. This should be interesting.

Also moving this to Feedback.

I think for the most part, yeah. There are some threads which have some really good info in them (such as reference info on "how to" stuff or calculating injector sizes based on hp, etc) so I think the mods should use their discretion but there is no doubt a boatload of stuff that really doesn't need to be held onto any more. I think mods should delete any threads which are over a year without activity and which are felt, by the mods, to have no significant needed info in them.

i think he is talking about a thread of a gut wondering if he should buy his evo that is over a year old. and to answer your question, although it would be cleaner if we deleted old thread, you have to keep in mind that we do have our hands full with current threads. looking for old threads would be very time consuming for us. if you see an old thread that you think should be deleted, please report it to us and we will take care of this. we are very dependent on the help of the members and for the most parts, the members really help us out by reporting threads.

thanks

Hence the reason why I won't touch anything except OT. The rest of the forums will remain the same. Going through all of that is a time consuming process (if we were to prune every forum). The OT forum would be a far better choice to focus on pruning.

If the thread has ANY relevance whatsoever, leave it. If it serves no purpose, clear up the space.

agreed - who's going to determine worthless or not?

It's really way too difficult for us to go through every thread and close them manually. We've mentioned this to Mark before to see whether threads over a certain age can be automatically closed and archived by the system given a certain age, but nothing has been finalized yet. The change to vBulletin 3 has also put other issues as top priorities, so this has been bumped down the list again.

Perhaps some forums should have automatic end dates such as for sale forums and off topic, but, even if we got a list of "expired" threads every day it'd be a big chore just to go through and close them. I guess we'll see what can be done again, but I wouldn't realistically expect this to be something that's going to be completed with the utmost of celerity. Ideally this is one of those changes that will go more or less unnoticed.

Erasing threads is bad news, IMO. Part of the benefit of this format of discussion is that it's possible to go back and search in and re-read old posts. And yes, there are year-old yet worthwhile threads in OT.

Also, based on my understanding, old threads don't create a burden on the server. There's no performance/financial benefit, in other words.

I agree that deleting them is bad. Our previous efforts have been to archive them. I think it's a lot more sound way to go, especially being that the text in posts barely takes up any server space.

The reason I want them closed and archived is because there are people who resurrect old, stupid threads. If they're archived they'll at least remain viewable for whatever useful content they may have.

I could work on an archive forum where year old threads get dumped. I think it would need to be well thought out, so we don't mix threads and lose the current organization.

I would really like to have a script that just closed a thread that was over 1 year old. That would allow archiving as well asprevent really old threads from popping up

Would it be 1 year from the start date or 1 year from the last post?

Yeah, I would just create an archive forum... that's what we do on SoCalEvo.net... but we don't organize that.

How about at least locking them so we don't have people searching for old thread and updating them.
