Moving to Killeen...

Well, my wife got a great job with Killeen ISD so it looks like we will be moving in about a month!

Anyone have any leads on jobs in the area for me?
Anything near Killeen, Harker Heights, Belton, Copperas Cove, Temple...possibly could drive as far as Waco, Round Rock, Georgetown, or Austin.

I have experience in Real Estate and Legal support, and have a B.A. in Political Science/English.

Also, anyone have any advice on where to live?
I've heard that Harker Heights or South Killeen are good places to live, but to stay away from North Killeen; any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

^ I was waiting for someone to say that. Hey, at least its only 60 miles from Austin, and from what I have seen of it, as long as you live in the right area it shouldnt be too bad.

The only right area is as far away from Killeen as possible. LoL.. And I only say that because I graduated high school from there and periodically go back to visit friends... But out in Heights or even on the west side of Cove are decent...

It really isn't that bad. Although I lived in Harker Heights. Harker Heights is nice and a lot of places in Killeen are nice, unless it's downtown. There's lots of real estate business in Heights because it is growing pretty fast. Try the building behind Krystal's on WS Young, right off the highway. I think it's called Shine real estate or something like that.

The two years I spent in Killeen stationed at Ft. Hood I consider to be the worst period of time of my entire life, including being stationed in Bosnia (yes, Bosnia was more interesting than Killeen...and no swarms of crickets, locust, or cockroaches...and at least the people were nice...). I do not have one single good memory from there, nor any desire to be anywhere near it again so long as I live. I would much rather live in South Central LA or Bronx, NYC than Killeen. I firmly believe Killeen was shat from the bowels of hell...but I hope you have a nice time! Right now I'm guessing it's only 110 degrees...perfect weather to cook your brain enough as to be effectively lobotomized and not really care where you are anymore...just beware every time it rains it floods, and often times rains gigantic frozen rocks...not to mention the ice rain...

Other than that, it's a great place! Have fun!

What type of residence are you looking for? A house or renting?

Wow, you must have lived in the ****tiest part of Killeen and not gone anywhere outside of there. Just don't spend your entire time in the downtown/business area. But there really isn't a lot to do to keep you busy. It just depends who you know and meet. The mall sucks and shopping isn't huge but I hung out with a lot of cool people and am going to enjoy moving back there from San Antonio. Hey, it beats being in your car for 45 minutes just to get to walmart.

LOL right now I'm 20 minutes from WalMart (but I don't shop there except to get M1 10W30 sometimes so it's fine), 10 minutes from downtown Portland, an hour from the beach, an hour from the mountains, 3 hours from Seattle, and 6 from Vancouver, BC Canada. When I was there, Killeen had no industry that didn't cater to soldiers, and they were pretty much out to rip you off at every opportunity. The weather sucked, the insects were ridiculous, the town itself was just dirty, run-down, and scuzzy. The people around there were either soldiers or trailer-trash types. Austin was boring if you didn't want to get drunk and wander around trying to pick up $luts downtown. Dallas was OK but not exactly close, and not exactly my cup of tea. I personally couldn't see raising a family there or even being there longer than absolutely required to, but hopefully the OP's experience will be different. At least he's from TX so that won't be a shocker...so maybe it won't be that much different...

I've lived in NYC, Phoenix, Tampa, Fort Sill, OK; OKC and now here. The whether is OK unless you are a yankee. Then it will suck for you.

There is plenty going on here, especially if you are into motorsports. Fort Sill sucked the worst for me, but even that became fun once I made friends. It's all in what you make of the area. If you hide in your house and never do anything, then you will hate this area or many others.

Tampa is still #1 for me.

LOL ok now that you point out all that stuff, I do remember all those bad things. So on second thought, try to get a house in Harker Heights if you can. The weather and bugs and stuff are just normal Texas things.
