Give back to your Houston community.

Anyone want to join me?

Description: Viewers will soon see television in a whole new way, but many citizens, especially home-bound seniors, will need help making this transition. For some seniors, basic television is their only means of information and interaction with the outside world.

As of February 17, 2009, all television stations will only broadcast via a digital signal, which means viewers currently using analog technology (antennae or “rabbit ears”) will need to install a digital converter box in order to continue receiving regular T.V stations.

Through partnerships with local businesses and other non-profit partner agencies, Volunteer Houston is spearheading an effort to help qualifying senior citizens successfully make this transition by providing the equipment and volunteers to help with installation in homes across Harris County.

Volunteers will receive a brief training before going out in groups of 2-3 to seniors’ homes to install the digital converter boxes, which are provided. You may volunteer as many times for this project as you like as it will be ongoing on a weekly or bi-weekly basis until approximately April of 2009.

Qualifying volunteers:
-come as individuals or in groups
-have a positive attitude
-have patience with and/or interest in working with senior citizens
-are 16+ years of age, or will spend their time under parent/guardian supervision
-have a valid driver’s license
-have transportation
-are able to lift at least 15 pounds
-wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes that you can move around in
-ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

***WE ARE IN NEED OF BILINGUAL VOLUNTEERS! ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO SPEAK SPANISH OR VIETNAMESE FLUENTLY!!!***

Please note the specific locations throughout Harris County where trainings and installations will be taking place on various days as they are subject to change depending on the client and volunteer base for that weekend.

If you have a coupon for a digital converter box that you’re not using, please donate it to Volunteer Houston or Interfaith Ministries so we can get converter boxes in the homes of the thousands of seniors that need them.

Volunteer Houston and the seniors of your community thank you for considering this project!!
