MSR - Nov. 1st
MSR - Nov. 1st
So I'll be making my 1st foray into track driving on the 1st.
While I have a ton of expierence in autocross. I've never been on a track. Any prep work I need to do before I head out?
Anyone else going?
Jeremy

hmm, that would be ApexDrivingSchool, NOV 1, opposite direction, 1.7mile
Come tonight or Sunday to NTEC and you can get great help
Come tonight or Sunday to NTEC and you can get great help
- race brake fluid (Prestone is easy to find, Motul if you can find it)
- HP+ or better pads (these are still streetable, and seem to hold up w/the heat/friction steet tires can produce)
- in car video to re-live and critique on these long, cold Dallas nights!
- watch this video of the current track record (it is counter-clockwise, and Nov 1 will be clockwise unfortunately)

brake fluid will be the big thing. If you can change your alignment that will help (camber).
Tire pressure like on the autocross is important, but your tires will heat up and stay hot, so keep that in mind.
And you're going to burn a lot of gas

How will the stock fulid hold up?
How about hawk HPS's?
Not worried about the driving, though I'd happily borrow someone's in car-video.
Website says CCW. Is going to be clockwise?
Sunday is the NTEC picnic at Lake Lewisville. Call me/PM/email me if you want a pass to get in and not pay $10.
If you've never changed it you're going to boil it. At the very least you'll want to bleed the brakes.
I did mine on stock X pads (with 1200 miles) and they held up fine. As long as they aren't toast or glazed I think you'll be ok.

Bleed the brakes at least, fresh fluid is better. Make sure you have some life left in your tires. Make sure your cooling system (radiator, etc.) works right. Check your lug nuts. Try to go with someone who has done it before, it makes it more fun. And don't try to "beat" anyone, it is not a race.

If you are slow, stock pads will be fine

So the event was awesome! Saw a guy there with a silver X. But didn't get a chance to talk to him.
My obeservations....
Hawk HPS's are no good for the track. They would overheat after one hard lap. They could recover quickly. But who wants to go slower waiting for their brakes to cool?
Sumitomo HTRZ3's impressed me for a street tire. I'm running 275/40/17's on a 17x9. They gripped well. But also overheated easily.
The stock evo suspension sucks. Ofcourse, I already knew that, lol.
Ohlins are going on the car tonight. And I'll have a TRUE set of brakes and tires on the car next time I go out. Hope to see some more evo guys out there!

the brakes can be made much better then they seem by doing some simple things. first, take the dust covers off the back of the disks. this will allow more air to pass over the disk without retaining the hear. then, get in touch with tim for some sweet custom porsche brake ducts that can be ziptied to the control arm and greatly increase airflow to the caliper to help cool them off. amazingly enough, i never overheated my autozone pads last time out by doing those simple fixes. they just couldn't slow me down at all
before the ducts and dust covers i could overheat the HPS pads as well very easily.

Everyone was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Safety was obviously their #1 goal. And I must say they run an excellent program. I will be back running with them in 2009 for sure.
Kevin, I will defintely look into those mods. But serious brake pads will be in order. Even without the heat difficulties. The brakes weren't exactly confidence inspiring. Heading into big bend @ 120+ wondering if your brakes are going to stop you is noooo fun!
