Test Pipe vs High Flow Cat vs State Inspection

Everyone,

I'm gonna be purchasing an exhaust soon, with either a high flow cat or a test pipe. I know there is more horsepower gains with a test pipe than a high flow cat, but is it worth the headache of taking the test pipe off everytime you have to get your car inspected?

So my real questions are:

If I do get a test pipe, and have KevinD tune the car with the test pipe on it, will the car act rough if I put back on the stock catalytic converter to past the yearly state car inspection (of course I would re-install the test pipe back once I have pass the inspection)? Or should I just go with a high flow cat and not have to worry about it? What is normally the horsepower difference between the high flow cat and a test pipe?

Thoughts?

Here in texas they are going to obdii inspect you so as long as the system is ready and not throwing code you are ok.

This applies for both test pipes and hfcs.

More than hp gains, the test pipe is much louder than a hfc inside the cabin. Typically a testpipe is worth 20hp or so. A hfc is worth 10-15 (depending if metal or ceramic).

Test pipe or hfc are both illegal. I personally went with the hfc to lessen the pollution and noise while ensuring no cels.

I personally wouldn't bother with the hfc. When I had my HKS with test pipe there was hardly any cabin noise. However with my Buschur bullet tbe there is alot of noise evry where inside and outside You will most likely not pass inspection with a hfc anyway. Just do the test pipe it will be worth it plus the people behind you will appreciate the gas high anyway!!

If he gets a good test pipe (like the UR) he won't need the o2 sensor extension.

Of course my HFC needed it and because of me, UR changed the design of the HFC to not need to o2 sensor extension.

Nice.

I didn't really read through this thread, but is your inspection visual or do they test the exhaust too? If it's just visual get a test pipe and weld a heat shield around it. Works for me and my Dad's cars and we're both catless.

Here they do a "visual" and a hook up to the computer to make sure it thinks it's working fine.

So a heat shield and CEL fix should have you on your way.
