My roommate uses Amsoil in both of his cars. I get all the Mobil 1 I can use so I can't see paying $8-12/qt.

Guess it depends on which oil each of you use.. If he is using Top of The Line AMSOIL SSO or Dominator oils and you are using just basic Mobil 1, of course there is a huge price difference, and so is there on the performance of the oil, HP, Fuel Mileage, Wear, Oil Temps.... He is using 100% PAO W/Esters and you are using a Hydro-Cracked at best... This is one of those cases where you get what you pay for..

Amsoil/Royal Purple/botique oils will never see the inside of any car I own. Period.

OilDoc is a shill for these people as it is his business so you need to be very careful with what he says. He is in the business of selling this pricey snake oil, so of course he will support it until his dying breath. IMO he walks a very fine line on here between selling and participating.

Let me put it to you this way, if the stuff was so great, then how come no car manufacturer recommends or uses it? You'd think that for people who own exotics would be willing to pay for and would use the best... and what do they use? Mobil 1 just like our Evos, M3s, M5s, etc. from the factory.

I'm just one guy telling you how it is. Don't come complaining on here when your high $$ engine, tranny, xfer case or differential goes boom in the night because the water you put into it didn't protect it.

That is your opinion/stance and are welcome to it... They are not "Boutique" oils. they represent an upper end product and if you had a open mind, you would see the difference if you tried them.

You evidently have no idea about me.. I am no "Shill" for anyone or any product. I don't say the things I do about AMSOIL to sell it. I sell it because I CAN say those things. If I thought Royal Purple or Redline were better, I'd sell them instead..

I have invested over 35 years of my life in this. It started when I had my shops, knowing that quality lubrication was key to equipment life. Several years later AMSOIL was introduced to me in Racing and then with a company I did some work for. Neither the Product or the company has let me down since.. I don't let the tail wag the Dog.

Well, I hate to burst your all knowing bubble here but, there are OEM's that use AMSOIL and it is Private Labeled for them.. Along with other commercially available oils that AMSOIL Private Labels for.

It also comes down to business and Profitability... There are Bean Counters that have as much or more to say about what goes into a vehicle as Engineers and Designers. Mobil 1 Pays for a portion of the printing of the manuals and manufacture of the oil caps. That's what happens when you have an advertising budget, just to introduce a new product, that will operate a small city for a year.

Your just one guy that for some reason want's his 2 minutes of Fame to spout off on a subject where you are unaware of the facts. Don't worry, I am sure No One will be calling you about their engine, trannies, TC's or Diffs going boom... I freely give out my Toll Free # for technical support and if anyone should have a problem. I also have the Support and Backing of a Team of Technical Support People and Tribologists...

I'll relay your concerns to the Gentlemen from Mobil 1 that I had Dinner with. I am sure they will be concerned as well. LOL

Thanks for the nice and sarcasm free response, I would have expected nothing less from you "Doc."

A toll free number... hmm.... my car just blew up. At least I don't have to pay for the call.

So tell me, who is private labeling this mystery oil? Or is it some "big secret" and the dealers are putting Amsoil into Mobil 1 jugs so that they can sell it for less?

I really don't care to e-argue this with you because you've "invested" 35 years of your life into this snake oil so there is no changing either of our minds on this.

Just understand that snake oil salesmen have been around for a VERY long time -- and I assume that they will continue to be around for a very long time.

Just understand...

AMSOIL Started the Automotive Synthetic Revolution 35 yrs ago. They are no "Snake Oil" as you put it.

Yes, there are things that we don't or won't tell because inevitably, people start making phone calls and it pisses people off. I did that one time and almost lost a NASCAR account...

Doc-
Do you have any numbers on the difference in HP, fuel mileage, wear, oil temps, compared to say Mobil 1? That might help your case, and subsequently increase your sales figures...

Thanks

TxEvo8,,, bizare you mention that because i was actually getting off the phone right now with our tunner and a local shop here that we support, we will be actually doing that test, on the dyno before and after, we are trying to come up with a good way of getting milleage, the wear case will be an oil analysis, temps we will log as well.

we will have a thread up for this,,,, t wont be no BS charts pulled from non of these web sites where the testing was done behind doors, it will be a straight from the shop/street test

hopefully we can gather some nice data, Jestr tunning will be supporting this.

Well after my car was "built" it was filled with amsoil and i wasnt aware of it then my next oil change my oil was getting hotter than before so i called my shop and asked what oil he used.. he told me Amsoil and i was like oh i just put in Mobil 1 and its running alot hotter than usual... so my opinion is that Amsoil is def a way better lube.. just from personal experience.. and the fact like Doc was saying Mobil is a HUGE company with MILLIONS to spend in marketing so they can buy companys to promote and pay for company to use there oil.. simple business 101 get the best to use it and people will think its the best.. plain and simple..
but i am with Amsoil...
and please dont classify Amsoil with royal purple that **** is just plain GARBAGE..

There ya go....

Although Dyno tests are important, it must also be noted that the "Behind Closed Doors" tests can be more important as they are ASTM Tests and can be duplicated.

Then, can be used in conjunction with Dyno reports.

The problem is Dyno Tests alone, can be deceiving as an oil can have a lower viscosity thereby having less resistance but possibly less protection.

If HP was the only thing that was important, I can sell an additive that increases HP and lowers oil temps... Unfortunately it degrades the oil very quickly and will cause engine damage.
