SCCA Autocross (Solo2) School in March 2009

Hey there everyone. If you've never autocrossed and are interested in trying it, I thought you might like to know about the SCCA's autocross school coming up in March followed by the first event of the year on the following day.

Even if you have autocrossed in the past, this is a good opportunity to work on some of the autocross basics. The cost has not yet been posted but I'm sure it's a very reasonable price for the amount of instruction and practice you get. The price of the class also includes the entry fee into the following day's event.

I plan on attending this because it is a good opportunity to get "warmed up" for the season and get some good coaching on technique (which I admit I could use).

The following dates are tenative. Please check the included links to ensure accuracy as the dates approach.

Texas Region SCCA Autocross - http://www.autocross.com/texasregion/

March 14, 2009 Beginners School Pennington Field
March 15, 2009 Solo Event #1 Pennington Field

So who's interested?

1) Evo Someday
2) Evo8RA
3) Street Monkey (March 15th only)
4) justnwynn
5) gentlyharsh
6) devinramen
7) red evo8

You can also do the Evo School -- which is a lot more money, but from what I understand is WAY better.

yeah, i've already checked it out.. unfortunately i work off shore with a 14/14 rotation and the only time that would be feasible for me would be early march.. all the way in St. Louis.. being as it is my first school.. and i would benefit greatly from ANY school, the convienence of the Dallas school would outwiegh the quality of the evo school i think

Looking into it..

Dallas, TX Phase One, Phase Two, and Phase Three

Phase One May 15th
Phase One and Phase Two May 16th
Phase Two and Phase Three - July 17th

I don't see a complete price but I do see that each phase separately is $250. Does sound like it would be a good learning experience. I should see if I can do this.

The cost for the SCCA autocross school isn't posted yet and it doesn't appear that you can register for it online yet. It'll probably all be available for online registration later this month.

For a "ballpark" amount from previous years, the 2-day SCCA deal for school and next day autocross will probably be around $60. It's quite a deal. The school consists of about 3 hours of classroom and 3 hours of in-car instruction. It's true that the Evo school is higher caliber if you have $250-500 to spend. Most instructors at the SCCA school here in Texas Region are Solo National's trophy-caliber autocrossers, so you will be getting good training and tips even at our bargain basement price. Our instructors volunteer their time to help pass on the autocross sport to a new generation of competitors. I wish there was a program like this when I began autocrossing in 1970, maybe it wouldn't have taken me so long to compete at Nationals.

I would think the school registration details will be posted sometime in late Jan or early Feb 2009. I still attend it most years to get an intense session prior to starting the year's events. It can benefit drivers of all ability levels. Come on out and have fun.

Mark

I always through the evo school for autocrossing was a tad on the expensive side but everyone who I've known that has taken it has improved their times dramatically. On top of that they always sell every single spot in my region so it would probably help anyone who isn't in the pro class.

There's no problem having two students using one car. You'll just take turns with the instructor at first and then can ride together. There will be some loaner helmets, but bring your own if you can get access to one. It makes things easier for you. Entries for the TX Region autocross school are normally capped at around 50-60. Monitor the website beginning around 20 Jan and follow the registration instructions once they're posted. We normally reach or come near the max # of entries, so you probably want to register in the first couple of weeks of it being posted.

Ditto this. I can't find anyone that's paid the $$ and NOT said that it was worth it.

It is a lot of money, but in looking at our local top drivers, almost every one has been to at least one Evo school.

To evo school or the scca school?

I'm torn on the scca date because it conflicts with the NASA TT event that weekend. Evo school is very expensive IMO and will likely cost me a set of tires (30 runs at Mineral Wells will put some hurt on a set of tires).

Dude, you would greatly benefit from the EVO school. And I mean that as a compliment. You should do it if you can. Trust me, it's well worth the money spent. I'm considering going once the new car comes in....

Ok- details for the school are posted and I was pretty close in my "guess-timates". Go to the TX Region Solo website, http://autocross.com/texasregion/ , right-click on the SoloTimes newsletter in the center of the page and save the PDF to your computer. School details are on page 10. Print and fill out the registration form, then mail it to the address listed. School cap is 60 people and price for school also includes the next day's autocross and is $65 for SCCA members and $75 for non-members.

Hope to see you there.
