Texas Spokes AutoX in Austin 2/22
Texas Spokes AutoX in Austin 2/22
The first AutoX of the year will be held at TechRidge this Sunday, 2/22.

Unfortunately I probably won't be there, unless I can find a car to drive. The Evo is up on jacks right now getting the new clutch. While I should be done before Sunday, the clutch probably won't be broken in and my alignment will probably be a bit wacky. I could probably run, but I'd rather play it safe.
But everyone should still come out and play since I'm sure you've all spent the off-season modding your Evos.

Good luck with the clutch, I am seriously impressed with the initiative taken on tackling this on your own. Now we all know who to call when its time for ours to be replaced! Your car will be missed during the next event

I'll leave it up to you to try and beat Rafal for AS champion this year.

Did you buy race tires? I saw you listed Kumho 235/40/17. I know the Ecsta V700 comes in that size because I almost bought them. I went for the 245/45/17 Victoracer instead.
Good call on waiting till you break-in the new parts...after all this work. But how about a 1st place trophey for your GF's bday?
You are right! I did get some slightly used V700. Bill Kim told me you got some victoracers. This is awesome for us to have (at least) 4 cars in AS (eventually), all with the same kind of equipement.
I am looking to install a front 21mm cusco swaybar sometime soon...the STI likes to roll and with the limited camber settings...
Anyone else planning to run in AS out there? Rafal expects competition.

Oh so now Bill is giving away all my "secrets" huh?
What kind of camber settings can you get on the STi? I think Bill said that on an Evo with the suspension loaded you can get the front struts to about -2 degrees. The factory specs also indicate -2 is possible. But a lot of reports on the boards show -1.6 or -1.7 is about the max. I'm not sure what the max in the rear is.
Maybe Rafal just wants an easy trophy this year after just narrowly winning SM last year by 6 points.
Of course that looks like it was more due to no-shows than poor performance.

MP5 you weren't there to act like a jackass! I had to take over for you. On my 3rd and final run (only 3 friggin runs today, damnit) I decided to push the S2000 a little harder. I felt the run was going well, aside from the 2 cones I picked up. But on the last slalom on the way back I got to experience S2000 snap oversteer firsthand.
The car snapped around couterclockwise and we started sliding down the runway towards the grass. It slowly rotated and as we entered the grass we slid backwards a good distance with dirt and grass flying up into the cockpit. Luckily nothing or nobody was hurt. I think my friend said we were going about 40ish when the spin started. I was pretty well on it up in 2nd gear.
I managed 16th out of 17 in X class... doh! High 52's was my best time. The best S2000 driver there got a 47-something. Scary fast, that guy is good.
Treefallen seemed to have a cone magnet on his car and took a few with him around the course. I missed the last run, did you clean your act up at all buddy?
Overall it was a nice day for AutoX and I liked the course quite well. It was just too bad so many freaking people showed up that we only got 3 runs each.
That only makes me want to attend DE events even more. Though the social aspect of the AutoX is pretty cool.

Car-Cross
There were ALOT of cars out, call it Car Cross, cars were crosssing all over each other. there were two different pits and a staging area as well. all handled well i thought by the Spokes people.
What a day THOUGH, good temps for engines and tires. i watched some good runs while i was there, including a big block Camero stripped for racing posting no better than a stock Miata. i'm sure both had a good time. but i came to see the Evo-STi battle and missed it, had to get back to the Ball-and-Chain and the rugrat.
iodine, could you tells us what it was like in the Honda as opposed to an AWD? also, saw what must've been your CLEAN white Evo, surprised there were no greasy finger prints, boy, that puppy was shining!

Im an idoit but Im glad you handled the jackassedness! I cant miss anymore dammit!
MP5! You weren't there! Not a single EVO on course (Iodine23 is excused). Guys...I am disapointed. We had about 9 WRX at the track.
Camber on subie is -1.5 rear and about -1.3 front. Rafal can get -1.6 front. Yesterday I was running with the right front whacked in, it was visibly positive camber (needs to be put back in place soon). When you look at tire wear, it is sooooo evident that STI needs at lest -2.5 in front.
Iodine in an s2000, what a treat! Now I want to try one too! Too bad you only had 3 runs, kinds of puts the pressure on and takes the trial and error factor out of the equation...sucks! Anyway I watched those carefully and boy...you did a nice fast backwards parking move into the field. Scary [scratched head] I guess you got a taste of what race tires are all about too! I guess you arere going through the same learning process as I am...smooth not thrashy.
As for my runs, on race tires for the first time! My first 2 runs...eeeek! Wanted to learn what the race tires feel like. Now I think I know, as I hit a cone wall that nobody has even come close to hitting. Wanted/planned to toss the car left and it went straight with absolutely no warning! (note: maybe cause I had a 250 pound passenger...and tires were cold?). Race tires either are on traction or off traction, no in between. So on my last run, I decided to just trust the traction, remain smooth within traction limit, and not thrash the car. It was sooo easy to do a decent time and hence with (49.8) I made it to -1.6 seconds behind Rafal: objective completed. One Lesson learned, more to come.
I agree, this course rocked! Tak was right on! Lets hope next time we have at least 4 runs... cause waiting 8 hours until we get to try 3 runs is a little....testing.
