Front Licence Plate in Texas?

I took the front licence plate bracket off my evo the other day and wanted to know if anyone else has done it in texas, and if you get hassled by the police. I think the law is "if you don't have a bracket for one, you dont have to have one" or something along those lines, but i am not for sure.

so, can you drive without it and not be pulled over?

The law simply says that you must have plates on the front and on the back. There are many people in general that do not have plates on the front for whatever reason...like myself. I wouldn't call it harassment but police do tend to pull you over since it is a probable cause for them to stop you. But I still take my chances. You got to pay to play right? BTW, if people are wondering, I have never writen anyone a ticket for no front plate.

When I got pulled over during a drive from Austin to Houston, I got warned about my missing front plate.

I toss mine onto my dashboard occasionally in order to make a token effort. I'm gonna try and figure out a way to mount it to my passenger sun visor. Works for SUVs.

I just got my first ticket in the evo just outside of Goldthwaite. You'd think a sherriff out there would give me **** for not having a plate, but he didn't even mention it. He didn't even give me a hard time about not having my current address on my driver's license.

I've been pulled over like 3 times for no front plate... That being the only reason I got pulled over... 1 Warning... 2 Tickets...

The ticket runs $150, but now you can get out of the fine if you setup a court date and prove you have put the plate on... This would mean drilling a hold in your bumper if you didn't already have one....

Needless to say, if you go to court with it on there, you better nto get caught without it on again... I'm pretty sure they won't ever let you off again...

I hope that works, because I'm going to court this Wednesday and I luckily have two pics of my car with the license plate zip-tied on my mesh.

Dealer didn't drill the bumper for my license plate bracket... just threw it in the trunk. I was stopped for that the other day... for the first time since I moved to Austin in 92' (I've not run a front plate on any of my cars since then). The Officer said "...so there is no provision to attach the front plate?" I told him no, the plate is in the trunk, want to see? "I'll write you a warning".

Seems I remember there being something in the law about there having to be a provision for a plate in order to be "lawfully cited" for not installing it. However, you know your still going to get the ticket.

Below is the link to the actual Texas State Code for No License Plate. I wasn't able to find any loop hole out of it like the provisions thing quoted above, but ill keep looking.

Basically it just seems that you have to have a license plate at the "FRONT" of the car to be legal in Texas.

Section 502.404 of the Texas Transportation Code

No Front License Plate
Obstruction of License Plate

I got pulled over just outside college station a few weeks back for not having a front plate. The cop actually was just done pulling someone else over and sped up at about 90mph to come up and pull me over. He must've noticed from the shoulder when he was standing there, and he must've hada quota to fill or something.

The funny part is, I have my front plate on the car. But since I was in the far left lane and he was off the right shoulder in the grass, he probably couldn't see it on the left side of the car. So I proceeded to walk him around and show him the plate and tell him that all these "new Evolutions" will have their plates over there. He told me to have a safe trip and let me go.

...I had mine on, then one day it fell off as I was leaving my driveway and I didn't even know about it. I heard a crushing sound and I thought it was a can or something so I just ignored it. The next morning when I was leaving my driveway again I saw my front license plate just laying in the middle of the road. Of course the plate was completely bent. I still have not gotten it fixed and if I get pulled over I can just tell them what happened, because I always keep the license plate on passenger side floor.

My dealer did the same thing. There is no way I'm going to go back and drill holes in my bumper now. I've gotten one ticket in 7 years in Texas and it was dismissed by telling the judge I installed it.
