Scary damage.
On Wednesday the car in front of me came to a full stop on an on-ramp about 50 ft from the end of the merge. Why? Who knows but like your guy perhaps he/she saw your lights closing and froze up, probably he/she was oblivious to you the entire away and hit the brakes because of whatever was going on in the car or in front of their car. It happens all the time and if you are pushing the limits of speed and space you have less of a margin for error.
I was on my bike and wasn't going to risk going into traffic half blind and ended up going down and doing the asphalt slide. Two people behind pulled over, the car that was stopped merged onto the highway and drove away.
Insurance will never buy that it was the mystery drivers fault. It sucks when circumstances put you in a life and death situation. You survived

P.S. Trees are a lot harder than cars traveling in the same direction as you, but you can't beat no injuries, even if it costs you a few K.

Hope you don't take too much of a loss.

True, but I reacted the way I did because I didn't want to risk hitting the brakes, having the semi truck plow into me from behind on the passenger's side rear, then having the PT Cruiser hitting me from the front on the driver's side front (I was in the middle of the lane change when the PT Cruiser hit his brakes the way he did) which would have spun my car like a top on the interstate. Causing a multi-car pile up on I-85 didn't seem like a good thing to me.

I see where you are coming from, and I am not trying to argue with you. I am simply posting what happened to me and how I reacted, using the defensive driving procedures that I have learned throughout the years.

yO bro...the same thing kinda happened to me so its good to hear that other ppl are in the same boat as you...
when i lived in florida, a jeep did a u-turn and cut me off right in front of me and i had 2 choices...to either hit them head on or plow into the guardrail and i chose to take the guardrail b/c i didnt want to kill somebody if i hit them dead on even though they were at fault...so my car was totalled and it wasnew. my insurance went up alottt b/c the car was totalled... i use to pay like $125 a month with that car now im at $350 with the ralliart. your insurance is going to go up b/c its ur fault and ur car was totalled and they will add on some insurance points (i got i think 4).. the cops took a report too and there was no witnesses so i was screwed....well sh*t happens thats how u gotta look at things...the airbags came out from my car and i was really lucky i walked away without a scratch...u just gotta take the good wit the bad and save some money and put down some for a new car and restart everything.. i kno it sucks but theirs nothing u can do but wait.. well hope i made ya feel better good luck wit everything!

We went today to look over the car again, and seeing it in person makes you really appreciate the responsibility involved in driving. I hope everyone that sees this thread and realizes that as well, if they never have before. Be very aware of what is going on around you at all times on the road. If you have never taken a defensive driving class, take one. They are worth the cost and time.
Sorry about the accident man, I'glad you and your GF are OK. Now maybe you can make some good out of this mess. If your car is in North Georgia, maybe I can get to it and get the front O2 sensor out of it. I'm needing one really badly to get my car back to stock. My car is at Dyno4mance in Calhoun GA, may your car is very near by. Please let me know where it is and I'll buy the front O2 sensor off of it.

Just go get one at the dealer. Stop being like vultures. lol. Plus he probably 1) doesn't own the car, the insurance company does, 2) have access to it much anymore (at least enough that you'd need to get an O2 sensor off).

Anyway, sorry to hear about your accident dude. I'm really surprised that NONE of the airbags went off. With a minimal front impact, and that SEVERE rear impact, I would have thought that they'd be deployed. Can't believe damage missed every single sensor.

Glad you're ok.

Glad to hear that you're safe. Best of luck with the new RS!

PS - I wish you could part that sucker out. So many things I'd buy...

I wouldn't buy it back if it costs more than 3000. It's just not worth that much...

Glad you've decided on the split second to save yourselves and bail. That semi would of just killed you and may even caused more accidents.

Least the semi driver stopped to see if you were ok. some people would of left and let you bleed to death.

Well, you got a good excuse to buy an eVo MR now. Thats a good thing.

Actually, I found a 2004 RS that I can get in for less than invoice, so I am going that route. I pick it up tomorrow.
