It is a Federal offense to remove a working catalytic converter.

I haven't had a problem..... yet lol.

But, on a side note, I plan on going to the dealer this week for some routine maintenance because I got a coupon in the mail from them. But, I got the car used and it has a test pipe on it from the previous owner. Will the dealer say anything to me, or are they like obliged to "notify the authorities" or something?

If it was a fed offense wouldn't you go straight to jail instead of getting a county citation?

its 600-1200 in fines and considered a felony. They can impound the car and it can only be released and taken directly to a shop or dealer to have it replaced with a cat.

BTW- If you are friendly with cops when they stop you, you are much better off. I got stopped for speeding last night, and was released with no tickets. Make sure your insurance and registration is up top date as well. If you have a military ID give them that with your license as well. My car is also tinted fairly dark, and has aftermarket exhaust as well.

TTP never breaks the law. We never exceed the speed limit either, especially while tuning..

+1 Tuning should be done in 2nd gear to maintain the speed limit on highways and 1st gear in neighborhoods..

You should do all of your tuning on an indian reservation to avoid federal prosecution.

i have gotten a ticket for exhaust. FHP told me that a straight pipe is illegal in the state of fl. I told him my car is below the max DB level. He said the wording in the law changed and any vehicle making "strange noise" could be ticketed. I asked if he was pulling over all the pick-up trucks with straight pipes and the Harley Davidson bikes. He smiled and handed me my ticket. A police officer signed off on it a day later.

Tampa cops are not too bad when it comes to cats. I've seen guys with b16s driving around town with the loudest things ever and cops drive by them. They have been nailing more people for street racing.

Plus helps when you have old firends that are now cops.
