Looking for a new job

Hey guys, I really want to get out of my current job, like ASAP. I really just can't take it anymore. I hate it - everything about it. I work at a Publix as a stock clerk. Been there 4 years.... will be 5 in October. I hate my store manager/assistant manager so much. My immediate is cool, we go out drinking . I hate most of the people I work with. It seems like management sides with the *******s that don't do any work, and leave the good people out to dry. Most of the managers don't know jack ****, go behind everyone's backs and do not compromise one bit, kinda like in a dictatorship.

Publix is just too demanding. I'm going to PBCC right now for a BA in business management, and I really have no time to do homework and study because of my hours. I literally just got home and wrote this.

I'd really love a job dealing with cars, but I have no official mech. experience/training. Even just working at a shop or something to that nature would be sick.

Besides that scenario, what other decent jobs around this area do you guys have? I'm looking to stay in West Palm/ Royal Palm/ Boynton area that pays decent. I don't really think I'll find another job out there that pays as well as I'm making right now ($10.80/hour part time @ ~35 hours/week). Any suggestions would be cool and greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the rant. I just needed to get this off my chest, and I need to get out of Publix.

Thanks.

yea I think im going back to school. Im pretty sure you guys dont want to do whatever your doing for the rest of your life. Be smart and go to school. I know its hard to have a 20grand plus car and still go to school because you gotta work 40 hours to support the car but I think im gonna sell mine and just go back to school and finish it.

Dude, ive hated my job sense i started it. Everyone at my work is a total dick. im the youngest that works there ( 20 ). I just started to ignore everyone and just do my work. if someone tells you to do something just go along with it. Im not friends with anyone at work nor do i wanna be. You have a car to pay for so dont quit until u have another job. if your looking to get into an automotive job you could take up insurance estimating. Its obvious you know the basic's about cars.
Look into insurance companys. All you do is run around the town and write insurance estimates for cars at like body shops or peoples houses. Alot of companys are willing to train you and give you a company car. and the hours are good. They give you like 5-10 estimates you need to write a day. If you finish early you are done. They pay salary. they useally start you off at 29-35k a year unexperienced. I dont know thats just my suggestion.

work in a restaurant as a server or bartender.. no experience needed. Many college students prefer this job and make $200 or less for working 6 hrs thats just tip alone. also, it depends on how good you are selling stuff. I use to do it so before you hand in your two weeks check it out. Its season right now where you make most of the money. For example, City Place (Cheese Cake Factory), Hope it works out

I've already done the restaurant scene.... didn't care for it. Right now, I'm in Wellington, which is polo capital. That also means it's busy as hell during season, and dead out of season. I really don't know what to do.

I'm 20, still go to school for a BA in Business Admin. and currently work for Stop & Shop as an evening store manager for about $32k a year. I love the place and they treat you right. If you are a competent worker, you will get bumped pretty quick. Stop & Shop and Giant Food Stores are the same company btw if you have one near you. A car salesmen is also a decent job to have especially if you have knowledge about cars in general. Think about it. You just have to committ some time to learn the game without making much. Btw, I will be stepping up to the Evo X soon (only have $9k left on the GTS) and will probably be in the same boat as many others who just replied to this thread. Good to know.

I haven't quit yet. I am going to wait until I find something. I'd try monster, but I have no resume, I'm still in college and I don't really have anything to put on one.

Holding a job for 4.5 years is a feat worth putting on your resume ... it never hurts to just put something out there. There are a lot of employers on sites like Monster that are looking to fill low level positions that don't require a degree. Just put yourself out there and see what happens ... nothing bad can happen.

I also kind of have an idea what you mean about Publix ... my wife works there as a bakery clerk and they've been jerking her around for several months about full time hours. She's working like 38 hours a week but they won't give her full time hours or status even though they've promised if for the last 5 months. She missed out on both of the bonuses last year because she wasn't full time.

Also, a lot of people in the bakery/deli aren't pulling their weight and she's having to pick up the slack. People leaving their trash for her to take out and not doing their dishes and such ... you know how it is I'm sure. She does all this stuff to keep the bakery going and management knows, but she never gets anything for it. It really sucks.

Good luck on the search man ...

At least you know how it is lol. Thanks. Maybe I will try to get a resume typed up soon. A friend of mines girlfriend works at a Nordstrom and said she might be able to get both of us a job there. That wouldn't be too bad, I guess.

Sound of soap box sliding into the room.

Food for thought from the old retired Army guy, go talk to the Air National Guard.
Before you discount this suggestion out of hand think for a moment.

You are working for the Governor of Florida first and the Air Force second. As such, the state pays you and the state has a big say in what you will do and won’t do. This is the biggest difference between the Guard and the Reserves.

Once you pass your Armed Services Vocational Abilities Battery (ASVAB) you will be presented with jobs that they need. Most of these are critical and understrength, they will also most likely pay a bonus of a couple of thousand dollars up to $45K+. If none appeal to you, you can tell the recruiter what you want to do. You two “work it out” and the contract is drawn up. Until you raise your right hand and get sworn in, you are under no obligation to do anything, you can walk away at any time.

Say you get the job you want and get sworn in, you go to boot camp/basic training and on to your “A” school for your training and you come home. You have to put the uniform on 1 weekend a month and 2 full weeks per year. Yes, you may have to deploy to some pit but as a retired soldier I can speak first hand that the Air Force’s idea of a pit and the Army’s idea of a pit are complete opposites! You won’t be gone long and the living conditions are better than all the other services except for maybe the Coast Guard.

Anyway, what you get back for raising your hand is training in a skill you can use in the outside world. You will get your college education paid for by the state. You will get yours and your wife and kids if you get married medical and dental for free. You will get a good pay check but not a great one (at first). You will get paid leave. You will get points toward retirement if you stick it out and you can’t beat a check for life by the time you are 40. You will have the opportunity / option of going full time active Air Force if you find you like it or walk away from it all once your initial commitment is up. You will get the chance to travel the world and see and do things you haven’t even imagined.

I’m not gonna blow smoke up your butt, there are times it sux bad and there are times it is absolutely the greatest thing in the world.

Looking back on my career the good times far exceeded the bad times. I traveled the world, went to some god forsaken lands and met some truly wonderful people. I spent a total of 21 years in Europe, mostly Germany and experienced things you can’t imagine. I worked at times with some of the most “high speed low drag” individuals you would ever want to meet. I retired enlisted and because I have worked with Information Technology for almost 27 years, the skills I acquired while in service has allowed me to get a check for life and make a 6 figure income as a Federal Employee. I have a daughter who did 6 years and parlayed what she learned into a Federal Job making mid 6 figures per year. I have a son who took the leadership skills learned in 10 years and is now a golf course manager making 6 figures per year. I have another son who is the production manager for the military news paper Stars and Stripes who is making about $80K per year.

I will be the first to say the life is not for everyone, if you keep your eye on the goal and let the rest of the crap roll off your back, it’s well worth it.

That’s it.
