Fuel Question

Filled up the lancer with 91 octane the other day because it was sold at the same price as reg (sold out) so i thought, eh why not because i couldnt remember what my auto teacher in high school said... All i remember was it burns slower and... its cleaner...

Do any of you fill your tank with premium oftenÉ

Not often but during races yest with 94 and sometimes in winter to get my car to operating temp faster. what I recall from Octane lecture is octane is the measurement of how easy fuel is combusted which is why turbo cars need higher octane. Cleaner is due the mixture of gasoline the more filler added into fuel the less hotter the temp inside the cylinder is leaving more residue but higher octane fuel burns hotter helping to remove deposits. Link below explain very breifly about octane

The Octane discussion is actually somewhat complex, so many different factors go into why and when you need higher grades of octane. Compression ratios, tuning (advance/retard timings) Turbo N/A etc... etc...

No harm will come to your car running 91 Octane, but it may do little to increase performance if your car is not optimized for its use. For example, Recently Infamous installed the timing module which created a need for higher octane fuels. There are a few threads and wiki's that go in and out of this topic, as well as on this forum using the search button

If I had a Lancer with no need for 94, I'd be rocking 91 everywhere I can. Unfortunately, I have no such luck. Be thankful, it's not a bad thing.

Anyway, if you are looking for 94, it is mostly available at Sunocos (at least in southern Ontario anyway) but they aren't that easy to find... especially if you live in Toronto.

This might help

Shell V-Power...

Tank lasts way longer, and it will make a difference performance wise even if you go nothing special. Noticable during take off.

and yes obviously burns cleaner. Best example was when OctaneX2 had a check engine light on and my pops noticed his tail pipe CAKED black. He did as he was told and filled up Shell Silver (V-Power was a little much at the time) and boom light is gone.

The biggest problem is water... my pops ran serveral gas stations in his life time and Shell always had the best gas. That nitrogen enriched gas they advertise has been in their gas for years.
If you buy junk gas from the cheapest places(pioneer), u need an additive (forget the name will ask my dad again) and pour a full bottle in. It will dry up the water in the gas.

no name gas stations are fine. dont listen to the bs the major refiners tell you about how they have some special formulation, 94 at shell is just as good as 94 at esso is as good as 94 at gto, its just a marketing gimmick

All gas stations fall under the Ontario regulations, i dont see how some can be different. As for shell with nitrogen enriched gas ? marketing gimmick untill i see proof that it does as they say it does.

As far as I know, Shell does not have 94 in southern Ontario... so it's not a marketing gimmick. If you want 94, you pretty much HAVE to go to a Sunoco or those other little companies (none in the GTA AFAIK) that carry the same 94 gas.

I had a Subaru tuned for 95 AKI; if I went with 91 (the most Esso, Shell, Petro Can offer in Ontario) in a pinch then I'm pretty sure it would be pulling power. It's totally different. Even all 94 is not the same as it might contain up to 5 liters of 87 in the hosing or whatever the previous filler put in.
