Radar Detectors - who uses one?

Driving back up to North Bay after spending the week end with gf and family I got pulled over around 4am at the 400 by Wonderland. I'm usually very vigilant but the no traffic really got to me.

Officer pulls me over and tells me I was going 142Km/h. I'm like SHIIT! Asks for ID and he sees my military ID and asks where I was going. I respond saying CFB North Bay. Officer gives back my ID and tells me he's only going to give me a warning and off he went.

Lucky break, i drove a maximum of 105 to north bay, took about 5 hours. It was better than having a huge speeding ticket!

Who uses a radar detector? I'd like to avoid using up all my 9 lives. I really can't afford higher insurance :P

I keep seeing Valentine one advertised on magazines, its only 399$US might pick up one soon.

95% sure they are illegal in Ontario, unless something has changed recently...

yea it is illegal, and police can know when you have them, then you're in trouble. being caught with one may also be seen as a serious offence by your insurance company

I use a Valentine 1, has saved me literally COUNTLESS tickets. If you are the 1 and only car on the road and the officer uses instant-on laser then you can still get caught speeding. In fact, thats how I got a ticket with mine. If there are other cars on the road you have plenty of warning and time to slow down. Mine is attached to the visor (passenger side) and wiring routed inside my A-pillar, then into/behind my glove box and then comes out under the center console so you don't see the chord, and you would have to be inside the car looking up to see the detector. Hope that helps.
Cheers

"Because radar detector emit a weak radio signal, police can detect these signals by a device called VG-2. As you’d expect, some radar detector manufacturers have special models that emit no radio signals while others are designed to turn off if they detect VG-2 in the area. With the exception of Virginia and Washington DC, radar detectors are legal."

not sure which makes/models have this feature- valentine1.com has a phone number so you can call them and ask if you are worried about it

I got mine for $350 American when I was in Chicago.

ITS A VIPER DETECTOR AS WELL

I have the this bad boy now and previous to that it was the Escort X50... Never had a ticket the 3years I've owned it. Now this one is ridicously accurate. It learns the false alarms and remembers everytime you pass a store with automatic doors, like Walgreens or a Grocery store. So the next time you here your radar go off you know it's not that automatic door, it's the POPOS!

Fully illegal yo...
I didn't realize so many people had them. And yeah, if you get caught.. you're going to court my friend. And you're probably gonna get a hefty fine as a result of that.
