Rusted studs

New to the forum, but have a situation you folk might have knowledge of.

I've a 2008 Lancer, base model, one option. Steel wheels, nuts that don't cover the studs.

In 2 1/2 winters of driving from Bradford to Hwy 7 on the 400, my studs have rusted out badly. The dealer didn't mention anything until my last service at 120,000km by which time i'm past the 100,000 bumper to bumper.

Anyone ever hear of a car's studs rusting out that badly that fast? Could it be the new brine MTO uses for road salt?

Side question - my brakes are finally due for replacement. What brand of rotors / pads would you recommend?

Ok, looks like the mechanic was handing me a line of BS. Yes, the studs are rusted but they don't need replacing.

One torque gun later i was able to chase the threads and the studs are good.

Now after repairing the other 19 studs, I need to put on full coverage nuts and do my brakes...

Still open to recommendations for the brand of pads and rotors....

Rust is very common for things not made of high grade steel. But even high grade steel can rust if it is abused. In this case, I have seen the use of high impact tools cause rusting of hardware. But it should be surface rust. It may be possible to clean it. But I do not think it will rust all the way down to the point where the integrity is questionable. In that case you should be fine.

In regards to your brakes question. I would consider going with Stop Tech Brakes Rotors and Pads. They are high quality and have pad options that are design for extended wear.

I have stoptech rotors and pads on my Lancer

If you need help finding these parts let me know and I will refer you to TLC affiliated vendor. Both TLC aligned Dealerships and TLC affiliated shops can help you with the parts and install.
