Exedy OEM clutch failure...another problem with my GTS

So the problems continue with my GTS and this time it involved the clutch and transmission.

I started having shifting issues back in the fall with my GTS and I decided to replace my transmission fluid with redline transmission oil thinking this would solve the issue. As soon as I drove the car i noticed the problem was still there so I decided to further investigate and my mechanic noticed some play in the shifter cables. I was so annoyed with the problem that I ordered a new set and had them replaced but still had the same problem. I got so annoyed at this point that I figured Id be pouring a fortune trying to figure the issue out so I decided to leave it alone. As time went by the problem started getting worse to the point the gears didn't want to go in and would get stuck when i tried downshifting. Months went by and now I started to notice that if I kept the car in gear and held in the clutch there would be a violent bang, but the car would always start back up again and I could take off without an issue. Eventually one day driving on the highway it got to the point gears were grinding to get in and eventually I couldn't downshift to slow down so I slammed into 3rd gear and at that point I heard the same bang and the clutch pedal just sunk to the floor. Luckly I was close enough to home and I caught every green light to get me home but when I arrived and stopped the car, I couldn't drive forward or reverse. Everytime I tried to do so Id get the same bang and the car would stall.

I had my buddy look for a new clutch for my car and I was looking at almost $1000 just for the OEM Exedy clutch from Mitsubishi and that didn't include the fact my transmission could of also been broken in the procession. I decided to search kijiji and local junk yards and luckily I located a manual transmission off of a 09 GTS with 30 000kms for $450 with clutch, transmission, and flywheel off of kijiji. I made a trip out to Quebec on a early Saturday morning and was back at my mechanics in Toronto by 3:30pm to hand all the parts over to repair the car. After my mechanic took apart the transmission he noticed the clutch was missing a chunk (which was still inside the housing) and that it had ripped apart the disk and chewed up some of the springs. The clutch does have 167 000kms on it but even my mechanic noticed there was alot of life left in it and that it wasn't a problem that could be caused by hard driving or such.

I had told my mechanic to order OEM Mitsubishi transmission fluid for my car and the following week I get a call from him asking me if I was sitting down to hear the news he had for me. Apparently, he was quoted almost $400 for 4 litres of Mitsubishi transmission fluid. He was so shocked he asked the guy twice to make sure. My buddy did some investigating over the whole Mitsubishi transmission fluid debate and contacted some reps he knows from different fluids companies and I was suggested to go with Royal Purple. My car is now back on the road and everything is working great again but now we're putting bets on the next item that will break on my GTS. My powertrain is pretty much like new lol. I can't wait for the day I get rid of this curse I call my car.

here's the pics from the original Exedy clutch

The chunk that was missing

The disk chewed all around

Was the housing of the clutch (where the springs are) cut? That's a pretty clean opening.

Nope nothing was cut, unless auto park Mitsubishi decided to purposely do something to my clutch when they were replacing my engine under warranty.

$400 for OEM manual transmission fluid is obscene. Call another dealer and ask them to give you a quote.

I paid less than that for 4 litres of OEM SST fluid, and that's about the most overpriced fluid in any model of Mitsu.

Transmission oil dm3 (qt)
Mitsubishi genuine Dia-Queen new multi
gear oil SAE 75W-80 (GL-3)
2.5L (2.6qt)

http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/catal...tion=1083#1498
1 Gallon = 3.6L @ $94

So for starters I'd find another mechanic.

That damage looks like it might have come from abrupt usage OR rough surface flywheel. Possible the flywheel wasn't machined during installation?

What does finding another mechanic have to do with calling a local Mitsubishi dealership and them giving him a quote? You do realize a lot of these Mitsubishi parts online have a huge price difference compared to the dealerships up here. Even if I wanted to ordered the fluid from the site I couldn't get it and it was something I needed right away. I had my mechanic call a local Mitsubishi dealership to find out how much the oem fluids were, so it isn't an issue of him trying to overcharge me because he's not stocking it and trying to make money off of the fluid. I've ordered many other parts through him for the simple fact I didn't have time to pick it up from the dealer, so when I do get the parts he shows the dealer invoice. In fact, I find Mitsubishi have no clue about anything to do with these cars, right from the top to the bottom, so Id rather take it to my mechanic that i trust, then to this with Mitsubishi dealerships that have no clue. I don't know if you know the history I've had with this car and Mitsubishi, so maybe you can see where Im coming from.

As for the clutch, if they're was a problem then it was caused by auto park mitsubishi back when they replaced the engine 2 years ago. A lot of things went wrong when I got the car back so I wouldn't be surprised if this was another issue. This isn't my first manual car and the original clutch with 167000km still had plenty of life left on it. Based on the amount of problems I've had with my car and how easily things break, Im not too shocked to see this kind of damage.

Look back to any of my earlier threads and you'll see if any of my problems have been driver error

I agree what what was said on dealer service, as I have been burnt by that as well. However, the cost of the fluid does appear high. Not saying it's your mechanic, but maybe his supplier.

I use an independant shop that can order items from a Mitsu dealer, and I paid less for SST fluid than your quote for manual transmission fluid. That in itself shouldn't be the case.

If you are ok with the price you paid, so be it.

I never bought the oem transmission. I hope you guys don't think I'd actually pay an absurd amount for transmission fluid lol

That's a good price for a used transmission. Need one myself. Hope i have your luck finding one. my synchros have been gone on 2nd and 3rd gear since around 100,000km. Mitsubishi gave me the usual warranty runaround and i decided to just live with it till i can replace the transmission. Through the issues i have had too, which mind you are no where as bad as yours, i will never buy another mitsu again. Hoping it holds together for a few more years. GOod luck.
