Could you explain to me the difference between the wide tank and the standard tank in the performance aspect. I understand the IX gets the wide tank while the VIII uses the standard tank. Why is this, and are there any performance differences between the two. I have the wide tank on my IX, but have an VIII bumper over it.

Performance you won't see a difference. They will both perform the same as far as cooling goes.
The Evo 9 bumper is only 22" wide, so the wide tank core uses a 22" core and larger tanks for better air distribution through the core. You could run a standard tank, but you will put 2" of core behind the bumper cover.
The Evo 8 bumper has a large opening that shows the entire intercooler. So it makes since to use the largest core possible.
Thanks,
Michael
