BEWARE: Compcams Quality control is CRAP!

If a cam or its hardware is defective, it could lead to valves dropping and making contact with pistons and essentially trashing the motor.
As to my experience, I'm no pro engine builder, but I've participated in 3 or 4 builds including a DOHC and OHV V8's. And if we ever encountered an important part, such as a camshaft, that was flawed we wouldn't use it. And keep in mind - these were our own cars, where there would be nobody to blame but us if something was installed wrong. I would be twice as cautious if it were someone else's car that I was being paid to work on, which is exactly the kind of caution that TTP has demonstrated by warning us all about Compcams. And if you'll notice, TTP's warnings have been seconded by at least two other vendors.

IMHO, letting a customers car go knowing everything was not right is way more of a quality issue than Comp's bolt thread issue. It is afterall the end installer that is responsible for the correct installation of a product like the Comp cam. If the bolt don't fit right - make it. Sometime a mechanics job don't go as planned and the mechanic must be able to think and come up with a way to get the job done while still doing a quallity job. Cutting a bolt shorter or having to figure out a correct bolt size is an example of how a simple job can get out of hand but still be done with a high degree of quallity. Letting the job go with an incorrect size bolt and then having that bolt back out and destroy a customers car is just uncalled for and is IMHO sloppy mechanics. It should never have happened and I don't see how it's Comps fault at all. The shop should have took the extra time to find the right size bolt - it's not that hard.
I am pretty sure it was just one batch of cams from the factory that was messed up. I got them when they first came out and mine didnt have any issues. I havent heard of any issues since either.
i got compcams in my 8. absolultly no issues, good power and torque gain.
but good to know .
next time i will go for JUN,HKS or Greddy. I never heard any complain about them.
but just for the record, this is a first one i heard about compcams.

Compcams have made more power than many other brands including the JDM brands. $459 even to this day is an excellent price for compcams, let alone at the first release of a brand new part in the marketplace. Truth be told we had planned on using these very cams in our own car as they were making the higher trapspeeds in local Evos at the dragstrip.
Their manufacturing was perfect from the start and we had no problems just as yours. Somehow down the line I believe they were getting DSM and Evo cams crossed up in the process and cam angle sensors bolt holes were not deep enough. Forced Performance states that they have since fixed their mistakes.
If you would like to be f'ed, we would gladly sell you a set of JDM HKS 280/280's for the MSRP of $760 a set. You sir, received a great deal, however -below any online price at the time with free shipping.

Well, now that you mention it, i did have some trouble, which i never though was a biig deal. But whatever they are already in the car, i just wish this info was around when i bought my cams.
TTP your not a bad vendor im just pissed at Comp! sorry for taking my **** out on you!

I just installed my 280's over the weekend, the cam angle sensor bolt hole was not drilled/tapped deep enough... I had a choice, either to cut down the bolt (plenty of thread left), get a differant bolt, or use a washer. I used a washer under the bolt head to space it out, letting the bolt tighten up properly. So far so good lol.
It is alarming though.
The other thing I was wondering about is Comp Cams hotline, another evom member suggested I might want aftermarket valve springs with these. I asked Comp Cams and they said if I was planning on running over 30 pounds of boost I might need them?! huh?

did you read all the posts? i'm saying it is not acceptable to make a part like that. what i am saying is, making a bolt fit in a hole isn't rocket science, and as such is something your average mechanic can overcome. so IF you buy a product that isn't quite perfect, someone who knows what they are doing can make it work.
Problem is, most people have never been in the business and don't understand that aftermarket parts are seldom absolutely perfect. I understand going into it I may have to do some minor tweaks to get a part to fit and function as intended. If I am not comfortable with the part it wont get installed. Is it fair to have to mod a new part? Not really. Is it common? Absolutely. We can complain about it but at the end of the day, its just the nature of the beast.
