I could see it being lame on that size turbo even on a 2.3 or 2.4.

The fact that my car can make full boost at 2500rpm and peak hp is pretty low it does not seem to be a problem. I do notice if I short shift it to much I notice the drop in hp.

Was the VIII trans stock or IX 1st gear.

I dont think 1st is to bad but a IX 1st with the final drive would really suck.

This thread is interesting to me , I'm in Australia with an Evo 6GSR BTW . It has the taller 1st 4th and 5th ratios std with that 4.5 final drive .
I'm sort of interested in the 4.1 FDR with the shorter 1st 4th and 5th ratios but in a 2L with a 9RS turbo . The shorter 1 4 5 ratios would be a tad shorter so possibly a bit easier for a low torque delivery 2L to pull .

I guess the other side of the low down pulling power is MiVec - or rather the lack of it in pre 9 Evos .

Did I read somewhere about a Ralliart 4.3 FDR option ?

Cheers A .

I have a IX 1st gear with 4.11 final drive and I seriously find not much difference in driveability. I have no problems pulling it out of my underground garage and I even do stop and go driving up a 20 degree slope by where I live. Fwd cars with econo tires often spin just trying to get going from a stop (not joking). Thats with a carbon clutch btw. And it doesn't feel slow in any gear as well. Theres less shove and drama than with my old 6spd in 3rd but the rate at which it accumulates speed isn't different. Only annoying part is reverse....its a little too fast for parallel parking without slipping the clutch.

For comparison I also have a IX 5th gear and revs at 80mph is around 3250.

EDIT: Forgot to mention my spool improved so drastically with the taller gear that my boost maps all need a retune. I'm on stock 05 VIII turbo.

Adrian,

As far as I know that is only a dog box option? I could be wrong, I know of only one local in the US that has the 4.30 gears in his rally car (or did). I cant recall if it was a normal synchro box or not though.

The carbon might chew up some of the clutch chatter we experienced. With the VIII first gear it seems to help get enough extra reduction.

You mean I mistake some of the chatter as clutch chatter, or the carbon reduces chatter just by its nature? I don't really experience any chatter unless I intentionally try and make it happen. Check my thread on a review of my clutch if you want to see a video of how easy it is to drive: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ve...-evo-viii.html

I think the carbon smooths it out more than you'd see with a normal street clutch.

Has anyone really pushed these drag racing yet? I've got a long rod 2.4 on 26s that I'm wanting to replace the stock evo 8 fd to drop my rpm from 9200 to help engine longevity. I'm wondering if this will hold the abuse and be a better alternative to an hks 4.11 as the hks seem to be hard to come by currently.

depends what type of mph you are starting from. remember your gear will be longer but you will also be able to run longer in 4th for higher mph.. really all depends on your setup. Generally shorter snappier gears are better if you can beast the shifting

Download the gear calculator Aaron posted and just compare with both final drives. Itll give you a good idea.

The least amount of shifting you do the better. Why I am stoked about the auto, 2-3 and I am done.
