Cant connect to XEDE

there seem to be several threads about this problem...however, none of them have really helped me at all...yesterday everything was working fine, until i tried to update my firmware to the new v3.

I installed and ran XUpdate and I had the same problem someone else seemed to be having. I could run Xmap just fine using COM4, but XUpdate would not let me switch to COM4, it would automatically default back to COM1...I tried adjusting my BIOS settings...that didnt work. I tried to change COM ports using device manager, that didnt work. I tried making my printer a "virtual printer" by selecting it as "print to file"....that didnt work either...

it seems his solution was using a different computer. Ok, so I borrow my buddies laptop who actually has a Serial port (labelled COM1 in his device manager) to try to install the new firmware (I am using a USB adapter). His computer could not connect to XEDE either. I tried changing his Device Manager settings also, but that didnt seem to have any impact. The XUpdate would not give me the "COM1 used by another program" error, but it would not connect to the XEDE.

So, I gave up for the day with XUpdate and tried to hook my computer back up to the XEDE and run XMap...now my computer wont even connect to XMap...I reinstalled my USB adapter drivers 4 or 5 times and reinstalled XMap 3 times. Nothing is working. I also reset my BIOS and reinstalled all of the drivers on my laptop and I still cannot connect. The thing that is getting me is that I could connect to the XEDE yesterday until I tried to run XUpdate and now I cant connect. I have tried all of the COM ports and it will not give me the "COMx used by another program" if I am using the same COM port on Xmap that my USB is configured to, but it just BEEPS when i try to connect.

Someone please help me!! I feel that I have tried everything that everyone else has found to be their solution and I am still stuck. I am running XP and have a reasonably up to date computer. I am quite confident it has nothing to do with my USB adapter since it worked yesterday and my friends serial port will not connect either. I think maybe my serial cable from my XEDE is malfuntioning but I'm not sure...HELP

So, you said that you have tried to change your comm settings in your device manager? On my computer I normally change my Comm 4, which is one of my high speed USB port to Comm 1.

I wont be in the office until weds, but if you still need help at that point feel free to give me a call.

If you already initiated xupdate and erased the previous firmware you will not be able to re-connect using xmap until the firmware update re-flash is completed.

make sure you boot xede with the wire then hit xupdate when it asks to proceed hit OK, THEN turn of key for 1 second, then turn engine ON and let it idle until the procedure is completed.

well heres the thing...i couldnt get XUpdate to work b/c of the COM1 problem...before I tried to switch my USB from COM4 to COM1, i noticed XMap had a firmware update option...so i tried using that...only to encounter an error message...however, I have driven the car since this occurance and it seems to run fine so I dont think I wiped it clean...tonight i will try to hook the laptop up and run XUpdate while the XEDE is in boot mode and see if it will connect...XUpdate will NOT connect to XEDE while XEDE is running normally with the key in the "on" position...so I didnt even try it in boot mode...i will give that a shot and see what happens...if nothing works, I will call you guys on Wednesday...its not really a big deal at the moment b/c the car still runs fine...however, i would like to get the issue resolved since its a little unsettling that I cant connect my laptop up to make any changes or resave my custom maps (they were deleted somehow when my XP drivers were updated)

Thanks!

I just realized with my last post, that if the only way I am going to be able to connect to XEDE is to run it in boot mode and update the firmware, I am going to lose my custom maps...like i said, i saved them to my harddrive but they disappeared when I reinstalled my XP drivers...does Shiv have these files on disk?? I would like to get the custom map file before I try anything else...in case I get it to install the new firmware, i dont want to be running around without a map...

I guess I will just wait

The maps do not leave the xede when updating. You can simply open the v2 software, go to maps, and click "download and show maps." At that point, save the map to your laptop, so it can be imported to v3 later.

Dustin-

right now i am running the v3 software...i am just updating to the newest coldstart fix version...

Problem is, I cant connect to XEDE at all...so I cant upload the maps and then save them...the instructions said to backup the maps bc they get deleted when the firmware is updated, but i cant connect to XEDE to save them...what do you think i should do

Dustin,

I am going to try a different USB adapter before I send the XEDE to you just to be sure. If that doesnt work then at least I can be sure that it's the XEDE or the harness. I will get back to you. Thanks for your help!

EVOtagger, I had this problem too https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=137118 and when I posted the question I was told it was my computer's fault. Basically, the thread turned into a mini assault on my laptop before I got any real offers of help (Dustin came through)

For some reason there isn't a glitch in the program but rather the problem lies with everyone else's computers even though Xmap works fine with V2/3.

My final solution was to borrow a machine from a neighboring business that only had one comm port, once the Xupdate was done V3 Xmap worked like a champ. Best of luck getting this sorted out.

Sam

Hey Sam...thanks a ton for the help...however, i have already tried a friends laptop with a single COM port and it didnt help...i also purchased a new serial adapter which didnt work either...im thinking something within the XEDE shorted when i had it in BOOT mode trying to upload the firmware...however, the XEDE still works fine and I didnt have any bare wire touching when I was working on it...so i just dont know...i spoke with Dustin ove rthe phone and we tried every possible computer configuration and nothing worked...

the thing that is disconcerning is that everything worked fine until i tried to update the firmware...then the problem came up...i thought maybe i shorted the circuitry in the serial adapter, but trying another computer and another serial adapter confirmed that is not the case...

Dustin- I came back in here to tell you the new adapter didnt work and that I will need to send you my XEDE...i will do so this weekend as I will be out of town and wont have to worry about my car anyways...i REALLY hope something is wrong with it b/c if you get it and it works, then i'm going to be pissed!!

anyways, i forget the work order number you told me to include on the XEDE (i think it was "4")...so I will just give you a call Monday and get everything set back up so you can be expecting it. Hopefully we can get the problem solved

Thanks!!

-David
