I ought'a smack Shiv....

....and myself.

So at the last TurboTrix dyno day, I had Shiv install my Xede and give my car a pump gas tune and a race gas tune. At some point in the tune my check engine light came on, Shiv noticed right around when I was pouring the race gas in the tank, so I figured it was due to the gas cap being off, and ignored it. He cleared the CEL by unpluging the ECU power, and plugging it back in. We tuned the car, went for a drive, enjoyed the race gas, and I went on my merry way. On the way home from TT the CEL came back on, and I was kinda confused on what it was, but I was the last car getting tuned that day, so turning around and going back wasn't an option. I continued home and checked the CEL with my pocketlogger when I got home. P0243, wastegate solenoid, there is a malfunction. I'm thinkin, crap, somethings really messed up here. So I call Vishnu, and David was a big help, he told me that sometimes they get harnesses with bad relays that don't send the dummy BCS (boost control solenoid) signal to the ECU and it triggers a CEL. He tells me to clear it one more time, drive around, if it comes back, they'll send me a new harness. Now this car isn't my daily driver, I really only take it out on weekends, so the next time I drive it, the CEL comes back, same code. So I call vishnu, they send me a new harness, I swap them, put everything back together EXACTLY AS SHIV DID and still get the same problem. I'm now thinking, great, my ECU got fugged up somehow, or the Xede is bad. So I get tired of dealing with it and drive the car around anyway, the ECU's CEL doesn't matter, since the Xede is what's hooked up to the BCS now anyway. I get on the phone w/ Dustin and we talk about it some more, and he tells me to pull out the Xede completely and see if I still get the code. I do that and low and behold, the CEL is still there. I'm really kinda pissed now, thinking my ECU is screwed. So I look around Vishnu's website and look at the installation instructions for the Xede. The pictures of which wire to tap on the ECU harness looks odd, and I go look at the car again, the instructions again, the car again. It doesn't look like the wire is in the same spot as the pictures. I wrote it off as Shiv is right, and the pics are just a representation, not the actual wire. But then it bugs me some more and I find a pinout of all the wire functions of the ECU. The wire from the Xede, Shiv put into pin 16, I look on the diagram, pin 16 has no connection, I look harder and pin 11 is the BCS connection. I look at 11 on my harness, there's no wire there!! Interesting!!! Pin 11 and 16 are on opposite corners of the connector 3 pins in from the end, so I guess Shiv pulled the wire, stopped to talk to Kim (damn distracting women ) and when he went back to put the Xede's wire in, he put it in the wrong spot. So my ECU never got a signal from the Xede and was constantly throwing CELs for the BCS malfunction. Well I put it where it should be and problem solved. Thanks Shiv!

Now that that novel is done... this is why I should smack myself.

I mounted a covered toggle switch in a custom fab'd panel that I put where my IC sprayer switch used to be. I used this switch to change maps between the pump map and race map. As soon as I got home from the dyno day I wired it up, since Shiv just twisted the wires together to expedite things. The toggle switch I got was a lighted switch from Radio Shack with 3 connectors, well guess what, I wired it wrong. The entire time I've had my Xede, it's never been switching to the race gas map. So when I went to the track the week after I got tuned, and went 12.1 @ 116 on 100 octane, I was running my 93 octane map. I feel like a total jackass. So yeah, I hope I hit 11s next time I'm there. The reason I never knew it was switching was because a: I look at the LED to see it change colors, and b: I didn't get a new laptop until recently. So yeah, lay it on me, I'm a jackass.........

what a week...

If Shiv doesn't eat his Ritalin for breakfast his ADHD gets the best of him sometimes. I will not go into a long story but lets just say I got really good gas mileage from Pleasonton to the IE. Not being able to race that posturing Mach 1 with my Stage 3 on the way home sucked. FWIW Shiv is a great tuner but he is human and we all make mistakes. It has been a fun ride with Shiv & David et al but my mistake yesterday cost me a perfectly set-up stage 3.
Also David tells me if he likes u he is more prone to make a mistake. So he likes u but probably not as much as he likes Kimbo!
And your toggle switch problem is why I never tried to put one on. Somebody inadvertantly switches it and Kaboom.OUT!

i believe in leaving one wire loose in the passengers foot well, and putting the other one in the glove box. That way its pretty safe.

Well, I used one of those switches that has a cover over it, so it can't "accidentally" get switched on. However, the switch does have to be wired right in the first place, lol!

I'm not mad at Shiv at all, it's a mistake I could have easily made, I just found it funny, so I posted about it.

I am confused...surely if the wrong wire was pulled there would be no Xede boost control?

were you running an MBC?

The correct wire was pulled, but the wire that comes from the Xede harness was put back into the wrong pin on the connector, so the ECU never got the dummy BCS signal and threw a code. Pin 16 on that ECU plug normally has no wire in it, since it's on the opposite corner of pin 11, it's a vacant spot 3 pins in from the end that you can put the Xede wire into even though it's the wrong spot.

Im happy to hear you figured this out Steve - I was thinking your car would go faster in the 1/4 with 385whp ... however this is kinda cool because now you know your car is pretty serious on 93! 116 is QUICK!

you ran 116mph on pump gas tune? you didn't realize you were running low boost?

what is your set up running that MPH on pump gas?

Well my autometer boost gauge is a piece, so my boost readings aren't exactly acurate. Once the gauge goes over 20 it kinda does what it wants to.

Yes, my setup ran 116 MPH on my pump gas tune with race gas in the tank. I don't know what it would run with pump gas in the tank, I never tried. Once we see a cool night in the forcast (less than 80 degrees) I'll be back at the track with race gas in the tank and the right map loaded.
