V550 - what Cams?

I am planning on getting the stage V390 done within the next month. For next year...probably around May 2006 I plan on going the V550 route. Since I have to choose what cams to get, what is the recommended cam to use considering I will be going the V550 route next year?

I was planning HKS 264 intake and 272 Exhaust.

This car is a daily driver....

You may want to really consider your Daily Driver being 550hp??

Just a suggestion

I am an old Mustang guy....and I am used to mid to high 11's at the track. I had a 2000 Mustang GT Supercharged pushing 450 hp with 3.73 gears. I had some supercharger surge sometimes, but for the most part I could deal with it as a daily commute.

What's wrong with 550 hp? The new vettes have 505 hp and they are daily drivers. I just want to make sure I "smoke" them if I see them

They've got 7 liters, you've got 2. The harder you push your 2 the more things break. That's all these guys are saying.

If you can afford to have your car down for a month or two if things go FUBAR, then enjoy.

I'd get the HKS 280s, since IMO that is what you'll want in there for the turbo upgrade. With a bigger turbo you need all the help you can get in the upper rpms, which is what the 280s are great for. By getting them right away you'll have plenty of time to get used to any drivability issues that come up. It took my car (read: ECU) about a week to "get used to" the new cams - something that was never an issue with the 272s - but now it drives fine. It does sound like a motorcycle at idle, though, hehe.

I disagree with the worry warts. IMHO, the only time you are going to be at risk breaking stuff is if you start getting stoopid with your ride. I've had all kinds of ppl tell me that there is NO WAY my stock clutch would last past 20K miles, and that there's NO CHANCE of it holding the power of a 3071 ... well, I'm at 34K miles now on the original clutch, with almost 3K miles and 80+ dyno pulls on the 3071. Still grabs fine. My "secret"? I don't launch hard in 1st gear. All other gears get pounded into the grizzound.

That pretty much says it all, doesn't it.

Almost all modern cars are reliable. I think it is funny that cars get a reputation for unreliability because of owner abuse.

My comment was not about breaking things - The Evo is stock trim is a VERY enjoyable/fun car to drive. As you start to push the envelope, I think it really starts to diminish its fun virgin qualities.

I had the V390 - it was very streetable; however, with the cams, lack of cat, Ohlins C/O's, the CF aero stuff, it became very limited in its ability to be driven anywhere at any time

That is all

By the way - I am positive you will be blown away with your 550hp as will most challengers

yep...I expect to lose the perfect driveability that I am enjoying now. But one of the things I heard was that the 2.0 engine could handle a lot and was very reliable. I plan on going with a new clutch once this one gives out. I might even get the beefed up transmission (I forget the guy who is known for transmission work on DSM's).

The only time I really jump on the car is at the track. I don't usually drive around the streets looking for races...I've got a 14 year son (soon to be a driver).....and I have him focused on racing at the track...not on the streets.

thanks for the input....looks like the 272's would be a good choice...good for racing...good for the street.

Oh yeah - I forgot to talk about that; 272/272

My analogy (Daily Driver) is like Pamela Anderson; I would much rather be with the unadulterated Virgin Pamela (long term) vs. the one with HepC, 4 or 5 Boob Jobs, injections to the eyes and lips, etc.... Mind you - the latter would provide one hell of a night

All 3 v550s we've had come through Dyno4mance are 272/272. Not saying its the best combination, but that's what they were. I think any cam combos will be fine, though.
