Tales From the Dyno 3/14: Mazda RX-8 Turbo!?

We just finished our little RX-8 turbo project using our XEDE for engine control. It was perhaps the trickiest car to tune. With rotaries, one good ping will crack an apex seal and necessitate a expensive rebuild. This car came in a few weeks ago with a blown motor running a Greddy turbo kit, complete with E-Manage and Greedy boost controller. The motor was rebuilt. The E-manage was tossed. The boost controller removed. And the XEDE with plug-in harness installed.

Stock, the RX8 makes 155-160whp and a miserable 100-110lb-ft of torque on our Dyno. At a *very* conservative boost pressure (safe for 91oct), it is making 230whp and approx twice as much torque. The chassis is loving the extra power! One can finally induce some tail-out fun in this thing.

Whp and Torque:

Boost and AFR

In case you're wondering why the AFR is lumpy, it has to do with the individual ports opening at different engine speeds. It was pretty tough to keep things safe and sound under these dynanamic conditions, relatively high compression and lowish octane.

Any guess what 100 octane would support on a set-up like this?

Impressive, but what happened to the last 1000RPM of the powerband, isn't the RX-8 a 9000 RPM rotory?

same here....bought an 05 for $22,000, it is gettting shipped this week. Unfortunately his is an AUTO. Shiv, got a "rough" price for everything....turbo, install, tune, xede, etc? Hes got excellent credit, so he'd probably be willing to charge the whole thing and he loves to drive fast....might have a customer here..

let me know, seriously!!!

Bump.

My friend wants to know why you didn't take it to 9,000 redline? Also, was there any sign of detonation in the low rpms?

Thanks,

maybe it was an auto, and it only has a 8k rpm limit? Just a guess.....I have no idea.
