Dyno Tales 4/12/06: Baseline IX reflash put to the test

Chris came in a few weeks ago to get his EVO IX reflashed. We had a pretty busy day on the dyno and he didn't have the time to get custom tuned. So we flashed him with our off-the-shelf ECU reflash. His car is 100% otherwise.

He came him yesterday for a dyno test. No custom tuning. Just a few pulls to see how much power it is making. Here are the runs as tested on 91oct.

WHP and Torque:

Boost and AFR:

Stock IXs, by comparison, put down 230-235whp.

I have My Trust In Shiv And His Product And I'm Not At All Worried The Only Thing That Scares Me Is Not Living Up To The Cars Expectations, Other Than That Everything Is Running Fine, And I Push The Car Real Hard When Raced....

i think it would be a safe assumption to say that Shiv would not run that type of boost on 91 unless he was absolutely sure that the car wasnt knocking all over the place. Im also curious to see how much farther Shiv can take this with some custom tuning. I guess if he doesnt do it on Chris' car, he'll have to do it on my car but with 93.

Shiv, have you found the IX's to be more knock resistant than the VIII's even with 91? Does the redesign of the coolant passages in the head have something to do with it or is it the mivec pulling timing? Inquiring minds want to know

Correct me if Im wrong but you would only want to put a cam gear on the exhaust cam since the intake cam has the MIVEC cam gear. Unless Im mis-understanding your post, I think cam gears would be counter productive.

From what Ive read the MIVEC cam gear on the intake cam is infinitely variable. Putting the gear on the intake cam would limit you to a set timing, and that would negate the purpose of having MIVEC. As far as putting one on the exhaust cam, I could see that as having potential if someone is able to identify a timing setting for the exhaust cam that would work well the ever changing setting of the MIVEC cam. Im curious to see what Shiv has to say about this as well.

I'm not questioning shiv's tuning abilities at all, in fact I plan on getting tuned by him this summer. I'm just saying that 24psi on 91 is scary because on an VIII this would be suicide...apparently the MIVEC and IX ECU allows you to run this much boost safely. Hats off to the IX and shiv!

Hmm.. he's running way more boost at the lower rpms - clearly showing that magnesium compressor wheel spooling up faster. Shiv really tuned my car very conservative. Notice how the IX really loses boost in the upper rpms where my boost falls less (this isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, but interesting to look at). My AFRs are also richer than the IX's (which might attribute to more prone to detonation or could be just a really conservative tune), but more flat. I think with an 11.1 AFR target in the mid-range (assuming no detonation), I could get another 10-15awhp.

FYI, we don't get the magnesium compressor wheel in the states.
