Search my friend. Search. I'm too tired to find them for you, but there have been plenty of posts on the subject. You can even use my user name as I've posted information on what brands work in several of the threads, I just can't remember it was so long ago.

As for a laptop, any old one will do, XMAP doesn't take much computing power at all to operate. If you're going to do quite a bit of your own tuning I'd suggest buying one of those used $300 dollar couple-year-old IBM Thinkpads off ebay. They're cheap and have a dedicated serial port on them and try as I may, I can't get a USB to Serial to give me the same refresh rate.

aparently alot of usb to serial adapters use the native windows driver, and yeah - the windows driver sucks for refresh rates.

I have both this one:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

and this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8

They both work great for a variety of applications and a several operating systems.

Oh how behind the times you are. My Macbook pro is a speed demon as portables go. It even runs windows if you want to play directX stuff -- too bad I don't.

its a billion times easier to code for serial than usb. plus the code for serial is already out there.

what developers should be doing is using usb to serial ICs and Virtual Com Ports. As far as the software is concerend its just another serial port, except we getto plug it into a usb connection. This is what CBoles did with his tactrix cables. Such a simple/good idea. not only that the convertor comes with its own VCP drivers not the windows ones.

Except that Ecuflash doesn't use the VCP driver. It uses the D2XX driver which isn't available on all platforms.

The only serial port emulator I have had success with in other applications is the Socketcom PC Card adapter. It's $149, but worth it. I have to connect these things to stupid serial port devices all the time. Guaranteed to work. Check it out....http://www.socketstore.com/product.asp?sku=1020653

thanks ! since Mike W and Scot G have highly recommended this product as well, since they happen to use a serial connection adaptor when tuning the EMS .

I second that, ill put my 1.4ghz ibook vs any pc latop of a 2.5 and below and it will blow it away. My outer has yet to be restarted or turned off for any reason in 5 months. oh yeah, just works, always works. I have a garbage thinkpad for my car though. I am looking to get a macbook. The reasle value on macs is crazy Mine will sell for about $1100 thats only a hundred bucks less than i paided for it a year ago. I want the macbook pro, but my budget wont work with it. I have yet to see a notebook that can come close to the pro.
