I agree jcnel. Also, its line of site and insanely narrow banded, so you're pretty much smoked the instand it hits you anyway.

Try getting a power cord with built-in noise filtering.

Or build a filter box to plug in between the 12v socket and the detector. Here's a good resource I found that shows how to build such a filter box: http://linuxcar.sone.jp/reg.en.html

Note that in the schematic on that page, you probably only need NF1, L1, Z1, and C1. The rest of the circuit involves supplying a regulated 12V for a computer -- this probably is not necessary to run a detector.

how old is the 8500? Most radar detectors eventually fall out of tune over time and through constant sun/ heat exposure. When they fall out of tune, they tend to give false alerts because they are now detecting emissions they were not initially designed to 'see'. Does Passport offer a retuning service? I know Valentine does for their units.

I ditched my 8500 for a Valentine1. The Valentine costs more but its the best detector made. Also I get NO false laser alarms..........none.

This is kind of funny, but in a week of having the XEDE in my car, my 8500 hasn't had a false Laser signal even once.

BuLocal,

I think it was you I saw today on PCH. You gave thumb up and I waved in the silver Evo. I recognized your name here after seeing your license plate. That Valentine must work cause if there's any place to test it, it's PCH. I saw too many cops just cruising at the speed limit while you passed on along.

n00dle.....
That was you? Nice ride, I almost got silver. Yea PCH is a great drive, as a matter of fact I'm hoping to take it up north to Pleasanton for a Stage II treatment once they get all the kinks worked out (and...sigh...once my wife gives me the okay). And yes the Valentine works great!

Thumbs up

Go for the Valentine, no problems and I've had the same unit for 10 years in quite a few different cars.
