Dyno with and without AC

25-30whp difference :

210-215whp with AC off
~190 with AC on

FWIW, the car was equipped with a 3rd party reflash, bigger throttle body and axle back exhaust.

As much as 30whp difference at the top end. Yikes. I still don't see any signs of an WOT-activated AC de-clutch. Same kind of hp loss I saw when I tested our shop car.

Cheers,
Shiv

Strange as the ECU has control of the clutch relay.

When will the intercooler spray output permit mapping to MAF rather than MAP?

I'll bet you guess what I'm thinking.....

could this be how "other " shops claim low numbers when they dyno your "toons"

Here is a question:

Did you have the climate control on "MAX A/C" or did you only have the A/C button pushed in?

Any difference I wonder?

25whp Your joking right? As long as the a/c button is off the more power?

This does NOT suprise me at all. I have always felt that there was a large difference when the A/C was on. Some people have told me that the newer compressors only use around 5 HP, but I always thought that those must have been some of those budweiser clydesdales hourses or something because turning the A/C off was like turning the boost up. I can't imagine why Mitsubishi did not tie in an RPM or throttle position activated cutoff. I guess the compressors are ok at higher revs? I would think that it would be pretty easy to tie in a relay to cut the trigger for the compressor in to the Xede, prefferably both throttle position and rpm activated. I would hate to eat my compressor due to the increased rev limit, I do not want to find out what rpm it is safe to the hard way!

Just to add...also when the heater dial is swung all the way right it activates the de-fog/mist which in turn will activate A/C pump but there is no light to let you know this.....I have fallen prey to this on the dyno and Shiv's estimate of a 25-30 hp is accurate...Strangely though, the Evo 7 in europe I am familiar with does not seem to be effected at all by the activation of the A/C

Makes sense... I can tell a huge difference with my a/c on...the car doesn't spin like crazy through 1st

I ran a 12.72 with my AC on with a Stage 1+. Ran a 12.69 with stage 1 with the AC off. No doubt it makes a big difference.

It was standard practice as a driving instructor to turn on the a/c in a new student's turbocharged car to prevent the potential for agricultural excursions when transitioning to full throttle when exiting a corner. The parasitic draw of the compressor would soften the transition to full boost and mitigate the potential for rotational surprises.

An underdrive crank pulley would reduce the hp loss due to the AC on, not to mention it should improve life for your compressor. On the street, the power loss with AC on does not seem that bad with the under drive pulley. Next time I am on the dyno I will test with/without AC.
You would expect at least a slight degradation in AC performance at idle, but oddly enough the AC seems to work just as well with/without the pulley, even at idle, go figure.
