Install Help Stage 1 Sig.

I am getting the stage 1 sig. in about 2 weeks and I was wondering if any one could post some information on the installation of the stage 1 (exed, cam gears, dumb back exst.). Like time, tools required, misc info.

1/2 day - gears will take about 2 hours depending on shop, the exhaust 1 hour max, and the XEDE you should be able to do

Marc the exhaust and Xede are very simple but the gears can be a hand full. I would suggest if you have never done a timing belt that you take it to DSM/EVO export in you area for the install.

Tools need
Timing belt tensenor tool ($12.00 bucks shop around)
Good 6 point sockets
TQ wrench
a good jack.

1. put jack under car and jack to support motor
2. Take off left (Pass. side) motor mount (1 large 19mm bolt and 3 small 14mm nuts)
3. Take cam gear cover off
4 Line motor up to TDC
5 Zip tie right gear (and mark on belt with whight out were TDC is for both gears)
6 use timing belt tensenor tool to loosen the belt.
7 Remove left gear.
8. Put new gear on (now I would use lock tight on the threads on the gear it's self)
9 install gear and have the belt off.
10. hand tight gear to shaft.
11 now with the socket wrech turn gear counter clockwise until the red dot matches TDC on cover and your whight out markings.
12 Hold the gear at TDC while slipping timing belt on.

13 repeat steps for right gear and your done.

Last step before putting everything together is to turn the motor by hand clockwise a full two revolutions to make sure it's smooth.

Done

By good zip ties nice large ones. Have a friend assist you and make sure you TQ everything to factory specs.

I used Eric's instructions but be careful with removing the bolts on the cam gears. The factory 65 lbs of torque is more like 90 to 100 fl lbs. I messed up by trying to remove the bolts on the cams by using hand tools. I would recommend removing the bolts with power tools because there is a less chance of you turning the camshafts back (like I did) and locking them in a position that will make you have to remove the valve cover and make this an interesting job to do.

I got so deep into this job that if I had the HKS camshafts in hand, it would only have taken me another twenty minutes install the 272's in. At least now I can install the camshafts by myself and not have to worry about paying a shop to do it.

Really I have never had a problem with the nuts but I'm a bit stronger then most of my friends

Eric, what happened was that I had to put a wrench on each one of the cam gears. As I attempted to break the bolt on the intake side, I ended up over tightening the exhaust side. So when I went to break that second bolt, it just would not budge. I put so much strength on that thing that I ended up just taking the entire gear with camshaft a good quarter turn in a counter clockwise direction. After that I could not put it back in place without taking off the valve cover and repositioning the stock camshaft. This is why I recommend someone to use power tools. The torque of an impact wrench will break both bolts without a sweat. This is just for info only...

Hey Thanks alot, keep them coming. The Exeds for the evo still haven't come in yet as of tuesday when I talked to them so they haven't shipped my Stange 1 out yet. Can't wait!

The way we do it over here is to just take the valve cover off. Yeah it may add a little time to the install, but doing so allows you to get a wrench(I forget the size ) around each camshaft while you're breaking the bolts loose.

That is exactly what I had to do for the install, and it makes it easier to put the timing belt back on. There are some step by step instructions on this site:

Just follow the instructions to the end of page one because that will help you get the valve cover off the Evo. The remaining pages are for installing aftermarker camshafts.
