Praise for Vishnu Stage 1+
Praise for Vishnu Stage 1+
Just wanted to give a big
to Vishnu for the custom Stage 1+ tune that Shiv put on my car back on January 31.
I got the Stage 1+ specifically to compete in autocross in the SCCA's Street Modified class, a class where pretty much anything goes with respect to engine and driveline modifications. It is not uncommon to see Street Modified cars breaking during competition or missing events due to motor, clutch or transmission problems.
But I had none of that. My car was absolutely reliable all season long -- this was everything that I had hoped and more.
And I did better than I had hoped, with respect to performance. In the local SCCA regional series, I have won every points event I've entered this year. Above the local level, I've taken 3rd place trophies three times this year -- a result which would probably have been much better with a more experienced driver behind the wheel (this was only my second season of autoX). I've beaten past national champions and run times within striking distance of others.
Other local autocrossers (most with a lot more experience than I) have driven my car and it usually results in a huge grin that they can't wipe off their face, followed by comments like "it kicks ***", "pulls like a Z06", "pushed me back in the seat hard". Another guy who drove a pretty nicely modded Evo (using another tuner's mods, and with stock cams) said that he could immediately tell a big difference at the top end -- the cammed motor just never stops pulling hard, all the way to the rev limiter.
Also, at least for me, this Stage 1+ has seemingly stretched out the life of my stock clutch. Yes, you read that right. In order to get a good launch for autoX when my car was stock, I needed to rev the engine to 5500 or 6000 RPM and I would seemingly have to slip the clutch forever in order to keep it from bogging. With the Stage 1+, I can rev to 4000 to 4500 RPM and do a clutch slip launch; with the extra power, the car doesn't bog and it "catches up" to the engine really quickly; the total time spent in clutch slip is minimized. My stock clutch has lasted through at least 60 hard "light tree" launches at ProSolo events this year, and quite a few other launches as well -- and it still holds strong. 60' times have been in the 1.8 range. Yeah, I probably could pick up a tenth or two with a more aggressive clutch package -- and I may do so for the 2005 season -- but to get an entire season of autoX out of the stock clutch was a huge bonus.
I just wanted to mention what I've done to my drivetrain since January 31, when Shiv dyno tuned it with all of the major mods already installed:
- Oil changes
- Replaced OEM panel air filter with K&N panel air filter (a 3 minute job)
- On one occasion, reattached upper intercooler hose to the throttle body when it blew off under boost (another 3 minute job)
Things I haven't done:
- Removed any engine covers, except to remove the cam gear cover once (I was helping someone else fix a cam timing problem, and we wanted to check my cam gears since we knew they were right)
- Touched any of the spark/fuel/boost maps
- Touched the clutch, transmission, or differentials
- Touched the turbo, boost control solenoid, BOV, or intercooler
- Installed any additional gauges beyond a boost gauge
- Had any oil or coolant leaks
Anyway, just wanted to give praise for a tuner who got it right.

Great write-up. I have been debating about the stange 1 vs 1+ but now I'm sold completely. I had been leaning towards the 1+, but I was not sure if the extra money and difficulty of finding the cams was worth the trouble. Now I know. Thanks for a great write-up and congrats on your race results.

Stage 1+ is an incredible package, it has NO weaknesses. The power band is huge the torque is awesome and oh yea, the gas mileage is better too! After that it's all degrees of compromising power band for top end HP.

However, I disagree that further upgrades end up being degrees of compromising power band for top end HP. Misc. things like upgraded IC and IC plumbing can net some more power over the "standard" stage 1+ and there are turbo upgrades out there that will give more power with no power band sacrifice. However it does start to become questionable in the bang-for-the-buck category ... Stage 1+ by itself is probably one of the best overall values out there.
