methanol + water = hot
today, i mixed 12L solution of 75methanol:25water and the mix got hot. Could feel the heat thru a 1/4" thick fuel jug...
what possible reaction is there between H2O and CH3OH that will cause the exotherm
methanol = CMOS grade
water = 18MOhm DI, fresh from tap
chemistry guru?

It is an exothermic reaction, btw.
Methanol also forms co2 and h2o when it burns.
The product "heet"(used to take water out of gasoline) is actually methanol or a mix of methanol.

something is reacting...
i read of this effect from c6c6ch3vo post. tried a 100cc mix in a foam cup a few months back and temp went up

There will always be very low volumes of Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms in water, and in methanol; Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms. Those "loose" atoms will join in a exothermic reaction to make H2 and Co2.
not a chemist, but a chemical engineer if that counts, lol. When you dilute meth with water, there is an exothermic reaction. Not sure of the chemistry, but it is fact. The heat generated shouldn't be extreme (i.e. melt the container), but you will see a temperature rise.
