Mind you...with the immobilizer key, you have to program all of the keys at the same time...and obviously that couldn't happen without quite a bit more information/proof of ownership. Show me where the ECUTek software allows you to READ and access ALL of the lines of code within the ECU. You can't. I work for Subaru, and that is how I know. There are multiple levels of access built into the ECU, and the final layer is where Subaru goes with their Select Monitor.
1. In order to get an immobilizer key cut (by using VIN number), you have to have the registration, AND your driver's license, and they MUST MATCH EXACTLY.
2. Getting the key programmed requires that you have ALL keys to the vehicle in your possession.
What IS dangerous IS posting the VIN number of the vehicle on a public board. If you want to help him, you just need to post the last four digits. That gives about a 1/10,000 chance (which STi's aren't imported in that high of numbers) that there are two with the same last four digits. I know from the VIN decoding that I have access to (at the dealership) that there aren't two STi's with the same last four digits...
Honestly, before you try to libel a company, you need to learn the facts.
I feel bad for this guy for having his car jacked from him. That really SUCKS!! I however think that he needs to look for the culprits somewhere else.
You're wrong Roo. I got a replacement key a month ago from the Mitsubishi dealer. I didn't have to show my registration or my driver's license. I just gave them an original which they used to cut a new key. When they were done, they programmed the key.
Are you saying it's not possible to get the immobilizer code from the ECU? No possibility whatsoever?
Finally, what's the deal with posting the VIN of a stolen vehicle? How is that going to hurt him? The good thing for Marvin is that I'm sure he was insured. So after the 30 day wait period, his insurance company will be getting him a new STi... unless of course, he wants something a little better, in which case he'll choose an Evo MR.

I AM saying that it is impossible with the ECUTek software to hack the computer and retrieve the immobilizer code. I don't want to get into the technical side of things (although I am knowledgeable about it), but suffice it to say that no one is getting that code from the ECU using that software.
Finally, posting the VIN on a vehicle would allow some unscrupulous person access to possibly getting a key. I'm sure there are dealerships which may not follow the security procedures, and MIGHT issue a key mistakenly to someone just using the VIN and cutting a key.
I'm not here to debate the STi/Evo rivalry, because I don't have an opinion one way or the other on those. I find both cars to be fast, fun, and handle really well. I've driven the EVO RS, and even during the break in period (friend let me drive it day after he picked it up), that car handled evenly and predictably, even under the 4K limit. I'm impressed by both the Evolution series, and the STi vehicles.
My point...

I feel bad that this car was stolen. I just think that someone should realize that slamming a company for something they didn't do isn't always the best course of action.
I hope they find this scooby safe and sound, and return it to its owner.
I think it would feel tainted if it's recovered. I'm hoping they don't recover it or they recover it completely stripped out down in Mexico or something. This way his insurance company will buy him a new one! Maybe he can hold out for the new 06? It should be out in a couple more months. Although I'm not sure I could live with that new look to the front grill. :-)

timing has nothing to do with it...just posting VINS and license plates online is not safe, whether the car is stolen or not...
That really sucks, and I feel the same way, I wouldn't want it back after it was stolen from me either...sorry about your friend's loss...

well, it's gone, and dealerships do post vin numbers to do car history checks online, so I don't think it's horribly bad...
besides, if the car is gone, the carjackers can just get the vin written on the car.

Think you might want to do some reseach before you start blindly implementing people and or companies. If this guy is your buddy you would know that Marv is a good friend and a loyal customer of ours. We have done the tuning both on this and his previous Subaru. We have also comped him parts and tuning for being such a good customer and friend. We have several people on the look out for Marv's Car and have been very proactive in helping him out.
You might also consider that making flase statements about a person or comapny in a public forum is against the law. Thanks.
