Why wouldn't you just have it shipped? Driving a car for those many miles at sustained speeds isn't really the proper procedure for break in anyway. Not to mention you'd spend almost a grand just driving it back.

That would be a possibility but I want to get it early in August and then break it in in California. I will stay with my relatives there, and also my girlfriend is coming to visit for two weeks so I have to stay there until the end of August. By then I will have had the chance to break it in properly and have had an oil change before I go. So in that sense the situation is ideal.

The drive home will be costly though. I can't argue that.

Hi guys, I want to be an EVO owner honest but I am thwarted at every turn by local dealers. From high sticker to high sticker, to you cant drive it, to wife freaking out by monthly payment etc....

Just so I can be perfectly clear here:

1) When a car is purchased out of state. I live in Ohio. There is NO sales tax ?
How is the car titled, will I be responsible for Ohio state sales tax when i title it ?

is a GSR a straight IX without the Sunshine kit ?

Thanks for your response. I will contact you personally to arrange financing or just buy the dang car!

Simply put...I bought my car in Cali, I live in AZ as a student, and my car is registered/insured in IL (Home).

I paid $25,500 + CA tax so I can drive it home, (other option was to have is shipped and pay $25,500 + $600 shipped to AZ). So you either pay CA tax to drive it, or pay to have it shipped, only two options. Now, I chose to drive it home and I paid CA tax. When I got to AZ I had my father register/insure the vehicle in IL. There he was NOT liable for any taxes UNLESS the tax rate in IL is higher than CA, then I would have to pay the difference. Now say IL tax rate is LOWER than CA, when I register my car I DO NOT recieve the difference (this depends state to state, most dont give the difference back). Simple as that. HTH...

You're telling me that I have to pay tax in Cali if I buy it there, and then other people are telling me if I buy the car in a place like Montana which has no tax, then I have to pay the tax of my home state regardless.

Your explanation was a bit confusing. Does this vary from state to state?

Thatmr2guy: You have to pay Cali tax, 7.75% if you buy in California apparenly. The only way to avoid this is to have the car shipped to you, but that takes a really long time and also costs money. Now that prices are going up, everyone is trying to figure out if it's really worth it to buy in Cali anymore... Anyway, give them a call and see what price you can work out, but you do have to pay Cali tax if you plan on buying there and driving home.

It's not that confusing...
If you are going to have to car shipped to you somewhere else... you will have to pay the tax for your state only + the shipping charges (look up DAS)...

If you are going to fly to California and driving the car back home you will have to pay California tax... Once you get home... if your sales tax is greater then Cali's(7.75% i think) then you have to pay the difference(Your states sales tax minus Cali's) but if your states sales tax is lower or equal... you don't have to pay taxes and I'm guessing they won't make up for the difference....

Buying another car just because the tax is different is pointless.... you still have to pay your own state tax on the car...
