laguna seca track day
Ran my silver evo Vishnu Stage I at Laguna Seca (Green Flag track day) Saturday. The car worked extremely well, passing just about every kind of car. We had three drivers, two had never driven on a track before. None of us were ever passed by anyone. Passed what seemed like every kind of exotic car and had a blast. Ran in beginner and intermediate driver catagories.
The car is so very easy to drive fast it just amazes you! Within about 2 laps you are comfortable and able to just fly! What a blast!
We did not time laps much, but did check one of our guys who had never driven on a track before and he was able to run 1:54 while out running a pretty well driven Z06 which is pretty respectable considering we have a basically stock car with stock tires.
Also, my son immediately ran 1:56 with the car which is the about best he can do with his stock 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera after several track days. He came in after his session totally excited about the car.
For those who wonder about speeds at Laguna, here are some approximate speeds we observed on the track:
1-End of long straightaway: 110-120 mph (varies by drivers nerve)
2.-Between turn 4 & 5: 100 mph
3.-Between turns 6&7: 95 mph
Lots of people came by to eyeball the car - I think it really turned some heads; most people just don't realize what these cars are yet.
FWIW, I think a totally stock Evo would not fare anywhere as well as our Stage I due to the huge increase in top end we have from our simple mods.
My mods for this event:
-Vishnu Stage I kit (running conservative 91 Oct. map)
-Ferado 2500 pads
-Motul brake fluid
-Mits. front brake guides with underpan tabs cut
-Redline transaxle, trsfr.case & rear diff. fluids
-Cusco 23mm rear bar (set in middle position)
-Clutch restrictor removed; braided clutch line
-alignment: 1.6 neg.cam.ft.; .5 neg cam rear; 0 toe ft. and rear
-Tires at 35 ft. 33 rear (Should have ran less)
-100 Octane fuel from track pump (used 20 gals. fuel @ $6.00)
-no other mods; everything else bone stock with 5000 miles
If you are intimidated about taking your Evo to the track don't be. You will be amazed at how easy it is and how much fun you will have. Track time is clearly the best thing we all can do with this car!
Hope this encourages some of our Evo "family"

The front rotors show some glazing signs but no big deal. Pretty well what might be expected. No steering wheel vibration. We used the brakes pretty aggressively but not extremely hard because we were not sure about them (first time). As it was we were able to out brake every car we ever encountered, and even more aggressive braking would have improved lap times.
We had removed the center caps so they would not melt. The front calipers have not changed color to a darker red as some have reported in other threads after hard use so we are happy with the brakes at this point.
Actually we ran Ferado 2500 front pads and stock rear pads because the wrong ones were supplied for the rear. The backs would be smoking a bit when we came in after a session but the rotors look fine. Will change those out shortly.
May go away from Motul to another fluid because others have told us Motul has no lubrication (oil) in it to lube the calipers??
Seems everyone has their opinion on their favorite brake fluid.

Glad you had fun, did you ever run the car with the stock bars? I have mine stock and was just going to see if it made much of a diff. As far as top end I think the car dies like on the top of 3rd from 6-7500 it starts to crap out, again my car is 100% stock. Also with the breaks they rock don't they, I was crapping my pants the 1st day because going from 105 to 40 in a few seconds is crazy but once you get it down you will catch everyone in the breaking zones and that is the best. I also had the same rotor deal but I have had the rotors on for about a month and had no problems. Also change the stock back pads lol I had the fronts smokeing when I was driving hard on the street. Also NO problems from the Vishnu? Now a track day is the true test. Thats for the writeup and let me know if you change your fluid to because I like the Motol 600 and had 0 problems with it.
Thanks
Ryan

Hey tuner, I was out there to check things out on Sunday and heard that there was a Silver EVO that was having some sort of a clutch problem. Was that you, or did I get mis-information? This was a Z guy that was telling me this, so it's possible he was just talking smack...
I was supposed to run my Civic and do a session in the EVO on Sunday, but lost my entry due to some mis-communication...

Yea it was kind of a clutch problem - it was just a problem with the line to the slave cylinder at the end of the day - something I probably caused. The clutch itself has always been fine.

With Green Flag they charge $300 a day, but that was a one time deal. You can check out http://www.greenflagdriving.com for an updated schedule. The only other dates that they have this year is Thunderhill.
There are other open tracking organizations as well. I'm not as familiar with them though.
