Possibility of moving to SOCAL

Hey guys!

90% chance i'll be moving back to San Diego by Summer. I have a question to ask...

My X is currently ECU tuned on 93 and I know CA only have 91! Is it safe to drive cross country on a 93 ecu tune and when I start getting to states where they only have 91, use the 91 and stay out of boost? I was thinking of purchasing a cobb AP, save the current tune on the AP and go to a protuner and have them re-tune for 91? Is that possibility or just wait until I get to CA and get re-tune there?

Any help/advices are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

If this is in the wrong section, please move.

remember that we have crappier 91 than other states as well.

if you drive like grandpa you would probably be okay but do you think that would happen for 3000 miles?

Buy some Torco and just add it in. It's the real deal and will boost the octane nicely.

I know CA has crappy 91 but is it really that big of a difference from 91 here and no, i probably will not be able to drive like a grandpa for 3000+ miles .

Responded to your PM. You just need to decide if you want a quick solution to get you to CA on the cheap.

- Do nothing, take a risk
- Use Torco to bump up 91 to 93 for the trip

or something more substantial

- get tuned here on 91 (as I described in my PM)
- use Torco or similar forever

or comprehensive

- Finish you mods
- Get a Cobb AP
- Tune on 93
- Tune on 91
- Other tunes, keep them on the AP and switch as needed.

Grew up in SoCal, then moved to AZ...it's the exact same crappy 91 here too

^ I agree with John. You can likely make the road trip and be fine. You likely wont find yourself spending countless hours driving on a road trip trying to go as fast as possible, you'll be in the long trip trying to milk the fuel economy out of it best you can.

Torco works, or even a little Toluene from a Sherwin-Williams paint store. Bumping from 91-93 is do able, just trying to bump from 87 -> 93 is what isn't really feasible with booster.
Here's a link with some good info.

If your current tune is Open Source, there's no need to spend 500 on an AP only to need all your maps created from scratch all over again, just get the TephraMod installed (You probably already have it since most OS tuners enable mod23 to monitor knock in EvoScan while they tune). The TephraMod allows on-the-fly map switching with using the cruise control.

I'll double check with my previous tuner to see if the tephramod is installed. How does the tephramod work? Do you need a Laptop plugged in to the obd port and program to switch maps?

Nope, no need for a cable and laptop if it's set up. It's definable how your tuner sets up the switch, but basically you press the cruise control button for like 5 seconds and then switch maps with whatever your tuner defines.

I moved down from Oregon a year and a half ago with my supercharged miata tuned on AEM EMS, and before I moved down I talked to my tuner and he was able to just pull timing on my tune accordingly for 91 (and perhaps some other things). So it wasn't a re-tune but the car still ran great on 91 and I didn't have to get re-tuned.

I'm sure with your Evo your tuner could do something similar to make your car safe to drive on 91 and then later on get a re-tuned down here.
