dyno with a/f ratios

Here is my dyno overlayed on a stock Evo dynoed last June in much cooler temps.

Yeah, exactly, I can't believe that there is no information about the throttle body. It seems that all we every hear when it comes to performance is an ADVERTISEMENT for WORKS about thier products. Same thing with VIVIDRACING, when they always say that they are going to dyno thier products, yet no one ever hold them to it. I am sick and tired of empty claims, if there is a real performance gain, people need to advertise the ACTUAL GAINS, not the HYPE!
Check out my dyno readings, it's no hype. It's for real and you can feel the changes specially above 5k. It pulls & pulls & pulls till the new red line.

Jess,
What happened with the stock run (green lines)? It's shaky as hell. Looks good though bro!

I'm guessing that is the car pulling timing in response to transient detonation -- something that is not uncommon on the stock ECU. We have seen similar dyno plots with stock EVOs on hot days when the ECU starts responding to heatsoak. Jess mentioned that both sessions were done on hot days, so that would be consistent with what we have seen the factory ECU do under similar conditions.

Thanks for the explanation on the eratic stock dyno. What's impressive is the Works dyno smoothness and consistancy on a much hotter day.

You also have to love those a/f ratios. Notice how the stock a/f ratio goes rich and dives off the graph while Works stays consistantly between 11 & 12. Good Job Works!!!

Mitsu makes the evo pig rich 9:1 AFR to prevent detonation, where is the saftey margin at 12:1 AFR? I'm not sure I want to drive a road course for an hour at near WOT with 12:1 AFR. I just blew a motor that was 12:1 AFR and only 13 PSI 8:1 compression.
Is anyone using the Works flash on a road course?

You can blow and engine on a far richer tune with an even lower compression ratio if the engine is detonating. Detonation can be caused by incorrect ignition timing, insufficient octane, insufficient cooling, and a number of other issues.

As a side note, this is why the Brain flash adjusts all ECU parameters -- including these very critical timing maps -- unlike simply manipulating the air/fuel ratio with the likes of an S-AFC or similar piggy-back controller.

To answer your question, we have numerous customers competing with the WORKS Brain Flash in track events all over the country. Keep in mind that under many sanctioning rules, the Brain Flash is an allowable mod (since it is restricted to the confines of the factory ECU) whereas most add-on boxes are prohibited. You can understand why the road race guys have been all over the Brain flash ever since it was released.

Jess, nice ride!
Would love to check out/get a ride in your Evo sometime as I am interested in the same mods. I'm in Santa Rosa and hoping you are close by (fingers crossed)?

I rarely make it up to Santa Rosa, but work in Burlingame and live in the Central Valley. Hopefully Works will have a Dyno Day and we can all meet up and check out eachothers rides. I'm due for another dyno since adding a 3" cat back hooked up to the exhale, but am waiting for the new Brain on Boost flash.

Decided to go ahead and try the 91 octane Brain flash. I couldn't hold out for the boost flash any longer.

Everything is as advertised. Pulls pulls and keeps pulling compared to stock. No 4wd dyno near me but don't need one to feel there is a big difference above 5k. Great job WORKS! Very pleased. Money well spent IMO. I can only imagine how happy I will be when boost flash is out. Standing in line waiting.

WORKS has great customer service! Sent ecu out last Monday, it arrived at WORKS on Tuesday and back to me Wednesday. No problems no issues, just the way I like it.

I wanted to wait and drive it for a week before posting my impressions. All good so far. No negatives.

Before Brainflash I was adding 3-4 gallons of 100 octane ($4 a gallon) with each fillup of 91. Now I'm getting much more felt power with strait 91 octane. Saving me $. In the long run Brainflash may pay for itself while having more fun driving.

Wish list:

1) I do wish WORKS would be more active on their forum. Get on here and sell your stuff!

2) I hope WORKS will have the option of a full 3" turbo back exaust flash along with the boost flash. I'm a little apprehensive about adding the 3" downpipe I purchased to my already installed 3" catback because of AFR concerns. Come on WORKS everyone's doin it (3" turboback)! I understand that you are developing a full exaust but I couldn't wait any longer with no word from you on solid time frame. Do you see any potential issues with the AFRs if I just add my 3" DP now? Word I got when I bought the flash was that there was no concern about running to lean with a full 3" turboback and the Brainflash. I'd like to hear it from Dave before I proceed.

3) I wish the boost flash was ready but I'm also happy that you are taking your time to get it right the first time and not putting out a problem product just to collect my $.

Good work WORKS from a present and future customer.

Take care
