3-Port Boost Solenoid vs MBC

I have looked at several posts discussing a 3-port boost solenoid, and how it is a better alternative to stock configuration.

I am not exactly sure on what is controlling boost with this item.

Is the ECU? Can you use a manual controller with a 3-port? Which one is better at there job?

Both are about the same price.

Sigh...

It controls boost better because it is more precise at controlling boost because it can eliminate all pressure getting to the WGA. The longer there is no pressure getting to the WGA the longer it stays closed. The stock system leaks more pressure into the WGA and thus it opens earlier and you loose boost pressure.

Yes, ECU controls the boost using a 3 Port. Yes it is better than a manual boost controller.

Clipse:

Do you have a preference on a 3 port solenoid?

thanks

Perrin has a pretty good writeup on theirs, including a basic explanation of how it works.

GM 3 Port, no resistor.

Over priced MAC valve... with a resistor.

I have the Perrin. My tuner vented it to atmosphere...makes a mean clicking sound at idle. You'll like having a 3-port.

I have one... seems to be very consistent even at high elevation.

Actually it's custom-made for them... and the solenoid is just of the correct resistance, there is no resistor in line. It measures about 25 ohm IIRC.

It will still probably have high pressure oscillations same as the other MAC valve. No buys it because it is about $130 for it. You can get a GM BCS for about 50 shipped...

I paid $90... and it's plug-and-play. With fittings and bracketry.

Fact of the matter is that it controls my boost curve just fine, consistently. What else matters? You're not talking to some guy who pays somebody to tune his car, I datalog and tweak things almost every day of the week. This boost controller works fine. There's nothing wrong with the GrimmSpeed EBCS and it's completely worth the ~$100 price tag for being plug-and-play.
