Those of you with Accolade v2 Grills

I just got mine in the mail yesterday. I haven't installed them yet, but I pulled them out of the bubble wrap and examined them. It looks like both the mesh and the frame of the grill is powder-coated. But it looks kinda cheap. And there are a couple of small "chips" or imperfections in the powder coating.

I'm not really complaining just yet, but I'm concerned about quality and future rock chips in the new grills. Should I simply put them on? Or do you suggest clearcoating first? Am I just thinking too hard?

i'm not good with this powder coating stuff but normally if i paint something and it's not smooth i wet sand or sand it a bit lightly to even the surface out then clear coat it... but wait for someone else to post up their opinion, i don't want to be the cause for a disaster.. Good luck though, how much did they run you?

$45 including shipping. If you go to the vendor thread, you'll find them there with all the pictures and the description.

Unless you use a spray gun, you're not gonna get the hardest finish out of your clearcoat. I even wonder if the original paint might not be more durable (since it's painted using a gun) than the can-sprayed clear you would put over it...

But as stated by bruce, if you decide on adding a clearcoat, you might as well wet sand the imperfections first...

I couldn't use my high-RPM die grinder to cut the slats (I need a new compressor ) so I thought I was screwed when I wanted to mod those... but you can actually cut and grind them quite easily. I ended up using a jigsaw to cut the slats per say, and then used a rotary sand paper barrel (I have no clue what the real name of it is, comes with most air tools kit) to sand the rest down to the exact height of the rest of the frame... and it came out real nice.

I highly recommend doing them by yourself... it's a fun project (if you have some patience to spare though 'cause the putty part is an exercise in patience) and is not that expensive. The mesh is so cheap to buy it's a joke, your basic Wal-mart paint is cheap too and body filler is not that expensive. It does for a nice DIY project... and then you can tell everybody you have some curtom parts on your car.

Try to get Dave @ accolade on this forum. He's usually pretty responsive.

I'm pretty happy with them by the way. Had some trouble with one of the plastic snapping bolts (the one furthest out toward the drivers' side), but I used the old "brute force" method and got it in.
