so if hids are cooler than halogens or what ever.. whats the wattage you need to stay under to keep from melting things

how difficult is the retrofit?

I was under the impression from HID planet that HID's use less wattage but because they are electrifying gases instead of a filament, the actual surface temperature on the outside of the glass casing the gases was far hotter than filament bulbs.
All I know is that I was testing my hid bulbs outside the housing once and I could feel the heat off those babies from about 10 inches away. I didn't have any problems with burning, but I had them in my stock housing, not a confined space like a projector.
I too am sick of the light escaping all over the road from my stock housings which is why I am putting together my retrofit projectors into stock lenses.
Quick question: On E46 benz or any other bi-xenon projectors, how do you hook up the bi-xenon solenoids to activate when you flip your brights on?

depends on your projectors. like for TL's, the solenoids uses 2 wires, positive and negative, all you gotta do is connect the positive to the highbeam slot on the 9007(our stock) socket, and the negative to the ground. from what i've researched, most people are running this way without burning their solenoids.
on the other hand, for other bi-xenon projectors.....you might need a resister to block off some voltage or else you will fry your solenoid. i had E55 projectors (off the newer maximas or the Benz's E series i believe). i found that the solenoid ran extra hot when i was testing, and plus some people on the HIDplanet forum have fried theirs, so therefore you need some form of resister.

and honestly, retrofit isn't that hard as long as you have the time and tools. let me try to take some pictures of my progress tomorrow if i remember hahaha......i'll try to at least.

oh btw, about people say that the HID runs cooler, i am not exactly sure. because the HID ballast acts as an amplifier, it only uses 35 watts from our car, but the energy that it amplifies is so much more than our stock 55 watts bulbs. so i believe it uses less watts to produce bigger energy, and since heat is a form of energy, it "should" produce more heat.
i am only going by theory, if there are electrical engineers or thermal specialists out there, feel free to correct me if i am wrong

installing the headlights isn't that bad, you should be able to take it off within 30 minutes.

ok lysy, here are some tips, first off take off the bumper, second i highly recommend taking off the headlights, it will make it easier to get the bubs in right w/o damaging them, then you will put in the bulbs in the housing and i recommend poking a small hole in the rubber piece (the 1 that goes over the large hole to cover the bulb) and run the wires from the bulb out, and then run the wires from the ballast in. plug the wires that go to the ballast into the plug that would normally plug into your bulbs, the blue wire will match with the red, and black with black (assuming yours are the same as mine were) then bolt the light back on. Finally find a good place to mount your ballasts, i put the left front ballast on the frame rail, right behind the front crash bar, and the right front one on top of the windshield washer fluid resivour (sp?), make sure they are secure and plug everything in, now make sure they work, BUT make sure when you turn them on for the first time make sure you leave them on for 10 mins to "burn them in". Hopefully i didnt leave too much out, and i hope this will help you out, gl on the install
