I have no idea what just happened, HELP!

Not too sure if I'm just being wussy about this or if I may have just broken something. When I was driving to work this morning, in seattle traffic, (bleh) I had to slam on my brakes and in the process my had slammed the shifter up from 2nd into N without engauging the clutch.

I didnt notice anything right away but since then I was able with a small amount of pressure to slip the car out of gear into N without using the clutch. I cant shift into a gear without the clutch but I fear I may have done some damage.

Any thoughts?

Dustin, I have done the same thing on a couple of occasions. I was just resting my hand on the shifter, and i guess i applied to much pressure, and it just went right into neutral, but that was out of 4th gear, but like i said it was only twice so i didn't think anything of it

No problem. If you know what you're doing you can shift from 2nd all the way to 5th w/o ever using the clutch. Not recommended, but don't worry about it - you're fine.

Yeah popping the tranny out of gear w/o the clutch doesn't really hurt anything. No worries.

woo thanks guys. I got really worried because I was never able to slip it out of gear before and now its still tough but it slips in and out easier. I'm at one of those nervous twitter junctions with my car right now and am freaking out about every little sound even when I know nothings wrong! lol thanks for the good info.

Yes, there are people that are able to do all the shifts just by listening to the motor sound and revs... not recomended if you dont have the timming yet
