Question MIVEC - how to switch it off?

-

Hi fellas!

I'm going on vacation, leaving this afternoon... and on this long road trip (500 Miles) I'd like to switch the MIVEC off (so to save some dough). I know some guys on here have said they do that... but I personnaly don't have a clue how to do it.

I guess it may be as simple as taking off a fuse... I don't know.

Anyway, if anybody knows exactly what to do, please let me know ASAP.

Thanks!

i doubt you can "turn off" mivec without setting off a CEL

Well, when I go econo, I just shift at 3k. That would be the easiest way... just shift before you switch to the Mivec profile.

I'm sure (at least) one guy on here said he does switch it off when needed... I just can't remember who it was.

Well, I intend to try it out (if I can get the info) and I'll let you guys know when I return. This will not be the most scientific of experiment... but I'll do my best to be accurate.

You can turn it off by unplugging the connector circled in green. But it will set off your SES light.

That's not the problem for me... the real problem is that at my normal cruising speed, the engine revs higher than 3500 RPM. Imagine the ammount of time my engine will be running over 3500 RPM non-stop over the course of the 500 Miles trip (mostly highway driving).

That's why I think this is the best opportunity to test if switching the MIVEC off makes any difference...

Thanks tuffguy! So only the connector and that's it? Cool!

BTW: Does anyone know what would be the risk in running for an extended period with the CEL (SES) light on? Can the ECU attempt anything when it sees the sensor has been reading at fault for a while?

I don't think that there will be any risk in running it for an extended period. The SES light turns off after you plug it back it and do a couple of runs.

I've been able to get 37mpg by babying it (shifting at 2.5k) and staying below 3400.

I go to WI from IL all the time... that's a pretty long drive...
All I do is stay around 80mph & am not in the Mivec range... Plus that keeps me from getting busted by those damn WI troopers... they hate anyone from IL!

i doubt that it will make much of a difference in fuel economy..

if you wanted to save gas, 2.4L is not the way to go =P

You're in MIVEC. It kicks in at 3500rpm, which is 75mph. To stay out of it, you gotta do 74mph or lower.
