Extended SRI??

Wasn't sure if this was posted already, but i searched and didn't come up with much other than topics on the SRI and CAI alone, but has anyone tried extending the SRI using piping? Since i have the SRI already i don't want to go out and buy a CAI as well, so i was wondering if i could get some metal piping, some rubber connectors and some O-ring clamps to make a makeshift CAI... any ideas?

i have an injen CAI extension for a manual if you want buy it. just PM me.

i'm sure you could have one custom made but i don't if anyone on the forum has done it before. not sure how much of a diff. you'd see compared to store bought either.

I made a custom CAI this weekend past. It goes down underneath the battery into the are between the fog light and wheel. I cut out the space beside the foglight to provide direct flow cold air. I used a cone filter from autozone(which I will be chaning to a K&N when I get the money) some 3" Sch40 PVC, a 3" rubber PVC coupler, and a 45 degree rubber pvc coupler. I also bought a 2.5" to 3" coupler at autozone, cut the mas sensor pipe off the stock airbox and used the adapter to go from the 2.5" ID to the pvc coupler and pipe. The upper section of PVC is approx 7" and the lower is approx 8.5". I can get some pics later this week if anyone is interested. Sounds great and gets the filter all the way out of the engine bay.

You definately can do what you are asking... because I did it. I ran a tube from the SRI down under the battery, and had the filter just above the lower splash gaurd. It worked OK, but in the end, I felt it looked cheap, and making up brackets was a pain. So I decided to stay with the SRI. If I want a CAI, I will breakdown and buy one... but I am happy with the SRI, and not having to worry about large puddles, which I do encounter from time to time.

For the $75 I spent on mine, I'd buy a used RRM CAI.

As for homemade brackets, just get some 1" wide by 1/16" flat stock, drill a hole near one end for the bolt to go through, make a 90* bend a couple inches from the hole, and another 90* bend however far away from the trans your CAI pipe is, and cut the bracket off an inch after the second bend. Use a hose clamp to attach it to the pipe after it's bolted to the trans. It'll look ghetto, but it's easy and cheap as hell.

In the little hollow space between the fog light and the front tire.

you have to remove (permanently) a splash guard to install it? Thats better than my buddies civic (only reference point) which is at the lowest point of the splash shields underneath the car (AEM).

of course I would expect the RRM to be designed better than a company mass producing intakes for many models of car anyway, but where does the AEM or Injen filter sit in our cars, same place?

You can either remove the splash guard, or cut a hole in it. I decided to remove it, so if I decide I don't like the CAI, I can put the stock intake back in, and replace the slash guard.

I'm pretty sure AEM and Injen both have their filters in the same place. There aren't many (if ANY) better places for the filter on our cars. I'd feel a little better with a bypass valve, but as long as I'm aware of the potential problem with deep water, I can avoid it.

yes its a 2piece and you can mount the bypass valve.

i just put my injen intake in and I put the splash gaurd back on when i was done. you have to cut a piece out to get it into that corner but the piece sits vertically over th main gaurd on the bottom of the engine. i know removing that bottom splash gaurd would get the filter really wet but i don't think it's restricting much airflow so i'm happy.

Hm.. i think i'll just sit with the SRI until i get some more money/time to pickup some parts to extend it. I was just thinking about it last night because i have the stock airbox in now and was analyzing the piping to the SRI... Also does anyone have a problem with their SRI filter rubbing against one of the hose mounts next to the engine block?? I have to replace my filter now cause it wore a hole through and i failed to notice it before hand...

My SRI filter is aimed in behind the battery near the fuse box.
