custom intake

i know a lot of people do custom mods when it comes to intakes and exhausts so i tried my hand at it and i dont know if its just me but i had some problems. about a month or two of owning the car me and my friend chopped an AEM sri made for a civic and put it in my ra...now it sounded great but the first thing i noticed was the check engine light...no biggie...but then i started to notice HEAVY throttle lag and even HEAVIER throttle lag right after starting up the car...and to top it off, at around 5500rpm the MIVEC seemed to kick off. soo i then proceeded to try some plastic intake piping from pepboys...less throttle lag than the AEM but still the MIVEC kicked off....now im running it back with the ari box till i order an itake from injen...anyone else have this problem???

That's why you don't use intakes not made for the car. Any number of things could've been wrong - wrong intake diameter, leaks around the MAF, leaks elsewhere, etc.

i had figured that much but i was just curious as to if anyone else experienced any problems like this cause im always hearing people talk about how their custom intakes or exhausts etc work just as good as factory made parts you know...but im saving to order the injen cai

I have since switched to a short ram design, but you get the basics from that thread. If you use the stock maf sensor mount you won't have any leaks there. The short ram gives much better throttle response. I will not be going back to CAI. I will instead be running some tubing up into the engine bay and making a heat shield for my new design. DIY for that to come as well.

custom intake. Wow, if you are going to be THAT cheap just go on ebay. MAF adapter plus filter for like $3.

our maf or yours? Cutting the adapter off the stock airbox is free. If I wanted to waste my money on my car I would have bought an evo and left it stock. This is not just to make my car faster, but to make myself better. Life is about experience man, if you buy retail all of your stuff then you don't learn anything except how to turn a wrench. I am the guy who guys like you ask for help when the wrench won't turn.

haha gotta work on your grammar...

jk

but yea i agree, its good to make something yourself, but to a certain degree. Personally i have no experience in custom intakes, although the concept seems fairly simple. (ie: no leaks proper diameter etc.) I went with the rrm sri even though my friends said i should just make my own, but i wanted something previously tested and reliable. I travel a lot and don't want to have an intake start ****tin' on me when i'm on the road. Its good to build something yourself, but you want to be sure its reliable... Also i think what touge was talking about is taking the intake setup from ebay and modding it instead of spending all the time to manufatcture your own (i think). Good luck with your intake regardless.

Also Dan how are you mounting those pipes you're running up to the SRI to the car/engine bay?

Right now it's being held up with heavy duty zip ties. I did it the night before the 24hr autocross here to get my low end back. I didn't think it would be that big of a difference so I only spent 5 minutes to move the filter. If I would have known it would be such a drastic difference I would have never put the CAI on at all. My low end is so much stronger and quicker to respond now. Definitely lot's of heat soak though. Next week I go to the dyno so I think I am going to finish the intake this weekend. MORE POWER BWUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Chipped the paint on my strut tower brace I was in such a hurry. I did this right after my shifter bushings because I ran under my alotted time for that install. Figured I might as well do the intake since I had wanted to see the difference. Like I said, I'm glad I did.
