what mileage did u replace the timing belt?

hey everyone!!! its been a while!

anyways,

just wondering, at what mileage did everyone replace the timing belt on their ralliarts?

and have you experienced any problems or noticed anything going wrong prior to a t-belt replacement?

I'm at 65k miles now and I'm scheduling to get this done next week. its going to cost me about $700 incl labor and I need to ask them what they're replacing so I dont get screwed. To my understanding, $700 should include the new t-belt, water pump, tensioner, idler pulley, struts, and cam seals? .. am i forgetting anything lol? i tried to do some research n thats all i got!

also, for a while now, when my cars idle, i hear a pretty loud ticking noise.. all i know is that its been going on for a while now - maybe a year or so - and its def coming from under the hood... not sure what it is.. my car drives fine and theres no other major issues that I know about.. just wondering if anyone knew what that possibly is??

I'm nervous about driving fast and for far places b/c i dont want my engine to die out... so i'm just praying that this car lasts me another 2 weeks !!

im bringing it to a new place by my house - sts tire & auto - im done w/ the dealership , ive had many issues with them and their too expensive. screw the warantee, i dont care anymore lol! -- im going for an oil change/air filter & new battery tomorrow so I'm going to ask the mechanic if he's experienced with 4G6X engines right?!! and if he knows how to do a valve lash adjustment? .. anything else I'm forgetting too??

and finally, after 4 1/2 long years, i FINALLY paid off my car!!! (i bought it brand new) what a relief!!

The ticking noise would be your valves. They are adjustable and should be checked about every 30,000 miles. Most don't need to be adjusted that early but I bet at 65,000 they are starting to get noisy. Any competent mechanic can do the adjustment for you as it is a fairly easy job.

Timing and balance belts need to be done every 60k. If you notice something go wrong before replacement, it's usually too late by then and you're looking at a rebuild.

Water pump isn't necessary at 60k. I just did my at 120k and the old one was still in great shape.

THAT, my friend, is good to know.

I'm looking at a timing belt change soon, also.

Make sure to replace the balance belt tensioner pulley. I didn't do mine at 60k. When I took it out at 120k, it was the only pulley that showed signs of wear and wasn't spinning as smoothly as it should.

Bumping an old thread.
What about the Timing Belt Auto tensioner (seemingly the most expensive individual part)? You think it is necessary at 60k?

Parts now I am planning for:
-Timing Belt
-TB tensioner pulley
-TB auto tensioner ???
-Balance shaft belt
-Balance shaft pulley
-Serp. belt

Just passed 61k and will get on this change soon. Suppose I could take pics for you rascals, too.

On the 4G63s in my past, I typically only changed belts and idler / tensioner pulleys the first time, then those and the water pump and auto-tensioner the second time.

I never had a water pump fail in less than 120k, nor any problems with an auto-tensioner from skipping every other belt change.

I am doing my 4G69 the same way. Did the timing and balance shaft belts and pulleys at 60k.

Valve lash , you can take the car to almost any mechanic and they will be able to adjust it for you. Should purr like a kitten after that.

I just got my timing belt done at the local mitsu dealer yesterday and the price out the door was $399 +tax. That was for the timing belt and the balancer belt, or as they said "you basically have two timing belts" lol. But yeah no need to worry about the water pump at 60k. After they were done he was like your car is in excellent shape, i also got a tune up also, so the tune-up and timing belt together was $556. So the next time i change the timing belt will be the next time i need a tune up. He said the ralliarts are basically maintenance free cars. I was expecting them to come back and say you need this and that, but he said everything was in great shape in the engine. Took about 2 hours to do it.

Did my timing belt and serpantine belt at a local shop close to home, I am regretting it now. I new something wasn't right when I picked it up. Since then the local shop has closed and I had to take my car to Mitsu dealer only to find out that my timing belt was installed improperly and the local shop didn't change the balance belt like they were suppost to. That's what I get for not going to the dealer the first time. Mitsu charges $400.00, so I thought I was saving some money by doing it somewhere cheapier. It ended up costing me more money in the long run. Luckily Mitsu gave me a break and only charged me $280.00 to redo the timing & install the balance belt, they could have charged over $350.00. Having work done at the dealer may be more expensive but they do it right the first time. And if it's not right they will fix at no charge for up to 1 year.

Sometimes its the dealers that screw you too. Just find a mechanic through a friend, one that isn't going to drop off the face of the earth. Luckily for me I did my timing belt at a shop with my buddy who works there. I paid less and got to watch them do it and help out a bit. Personally no one works on my car unless I'm there. However I wish that happened when I did my tranny, it cost me 2200$ later and two rebuilds because the mechanic opted not to replace everything that was needed.

What are you guys getting quoted for prices to replace the timing belt? I was quoted $1500 for this job for the parts and labour including the belt, tensioner, and pulleys.

Judging by what I've read so far I'm getting ripped off at these prices.

Yep you are.. Order the parts from RusselM on teh forum. He'll throw together a whole package for you or he'll piece something together for you. As for the install I don't know what shops you're going to but ask around your area..
