RRM Piggyback and Smog

My car is due for a smog test real soon and the RRM piggyback was my most recent mod. My friend who helped me install it said that it might not pass smog with the piggyback, but I believe I read somewhere on the forum that it will. I couldn't find any answers to this so now I'm wondering if someone does have a definite answer so I know what I will be getting myself into. Thank you.

It would depend on the depth of the smog test and how well you've tuned the Piggyback. If all they do is plug in a scanner to check for fault codes and then pressure test your gas cap, you should do fine. If they run the car on a treadmill and sniff the exhaust, you might fail if your tune is too rich (fail HC) or lean (fail NOx).

My car passed the scanner and cap test several times. Never had the treadmill. As long as my CEL stayed off, I knew I was OK.

Change your oil and filter, change (or clean) your air filter, drive the car for about 30 minutes before going in for testing to get it fully warmed up. The clean oil will lower your HC count, and the clean air filter will help keep the CO down. If your Piggy is tuned too lean, your CEL should be on. If it isn't, you should pass with no problems.

EDIT: You're in San Diego, where they may or may not run cars on the treadmill, depending on your Zip code.

so if I do fail the smog, I can easily uninstall it. The wires weren't soldered together, but instead have the male and female ends. I will be doing the smog in January, right now I'm home for the holidays.

I would just disconnect it since it's relatively easy , why take the risk of failing...

but has anyone actually failed a smog test because of the piggyback? The wires aren't soldered, but it would be a pain to put it back to stock and then switch it back after the test.

went in for a smog today and passed WITHOUT removing the RRM piggyback. They tested it on a treadmill. I can drive for another year now, LOL

glad to hear. and to answer your question i dont know if anyone is failed without taking the piggyback out. i've had mine in for 2 inspections and have had no issues. only code my car ever threw was the one about the cat inefficiency cause i had a high-flow. O2 spacer solved that problem
