found this just now:

http://www.freewebs.com/mitsu-info/a...0-%20front.pdf

a little bit of good info in there, this might have some insight for you canada_comp ...it's old but still applies...i have reason to believe this "dynamic damper" is a weak point in the axles...

Dave,
I know this is for 2008 and later, but it fits what the dealership told me and seems to be whats happening to our lancers:

I suppose the fix would be to pack the CV joints full of some good synthetic grease.

There's some more threads with people asking about this.

I should also add that this only happens on my car when the wheel slips on ice or snow while turning.

wel, well, well....so, i discovered that the buzzing/howling was one of two bearings, most likely the output shaft bearing with the massively pitted outer race...but the clackety clack was still there...well after snapping an axle at the track, it took some time to find a replacement, big thanks the George, aka 2006_RA for grabbing me one from Ottawa on his way down, after a wrecker near Toronto dropped the ball on me thursday evening...

got the car back on the road the next day, but before i took her off the jacks, i ran the engine....clackety clack was gone, the noise turned out to be the axle internally broken in the dynamic damper, and the two jagged ends smashing eachother around, but with the vehicle on the ground and the suspension loaded, i guess there was some pressure keeping the two jagged ends together and meshing somehow to allow power delivery to the wheel, until it finally broke after a couple R-compound burnouts and about 12 or so 1/4 mile passes...

here's what it looks like off the car...

After these pics were taken, i found the CV joints are in pretty good shape still, so i'll see about having a custom shaft made, and reuse the joints...

Keep us posted, as usual! If you get a new shaft made, can you ask the fabricator what material they are using? I'd like to know for my own knowledge bank what steel, is it 4340 or something else heat-treatable like cheaper 1050.

I can't work on Dec 1 (going to see a pro boxing card at the Hershey Center), but most other days are free if you need the shop.

Do auto and stick use the same axels? I passed on a set for $50, didnt think they were hard to come by, think they were from an auto, but he may have had 2 sets.
