SES light & Evaporative Check Valve

I took my 04 Ralliart in to the shop to find out the source of the SES light and they told me that it needs the evap check valve replaced (part# MR464336). They want $210 for the part plus labor, which makes me suspicious. I can find this part online for about $60, but can someone tell me where this part is and how difficult it is to replace? It is above the fuel tank, and if so, does it require dropping the tank?

I am a capable mechanic, but the car is new to me and I no longer have tools or a place to work. I am fine paying the shop to repair it if it is more than I can easily do with the car on the ground.

Thanks!
Dave

Its located in that little black box under the rear bumper opposite of the muffler. I'll see if I can find it in the shop manual and get back to you.

I have looked for a bit and I see that there are 2 ECV's , A and B. A is much easier to get to than B , and with B you might have to drop the tank. I find it odd that one of these would fail though, I woul think the fuel pump/filter would die first.

Excellent info, thank you. With the exception of a low and mildly hunting idle, the car runs great. The SES light is on though, so I took it to a shop to find out why and they told me it needs the evap valve. They did not tell me what the code is or clear them. Perhaps I'll see if there is a parts store around that will pull codes, so I can find out what code it is and report back.

Do you have any idea where check valve A is located? Nothing looks obvious to me in the picture you provided.

Thanks again,
Dave

I had the evap code come up on me once. But it was a little gizmo on the passenger side of the intake manifold. Fixed it by swapping it off my spare engine. I think it had a solenoid valve in it or something. Just throwing my .02 in for something to check that is in an easy enough location to get to. If you look under the hood there should be a diagram that will show you the evap lines.

There is a solenoid valve on the left side of your intake manifold. That was what was causing my Evap Emissions CEL to come on. Pics to follow.

Diagram I was talking about that is under your hood.

oh that thing...yeah, i forgot that was even there...it doesn't actually interact with the manifold in that location, and i wasn't sure what you meant by "gizmo"

Yea it just kinda hangs around right there. And I couldnt think of what it was called, I was thinking there was more to it than just a solenoid valve! LOL!! I kept wanting to say it was the EGR but that sits on top of the runners so I knew that wasnt it. Popped the hood at lunch to double check and it says it right there on the diagram "Solenoid Valve". Pretty simple haha!

Excellent info bakuro117, that gives me one more thing to check. Does anyone know the test procedures to find out if it is working properly?

Thanks,
Dave

Parts stores do not read codes here and shops want $60+ to read the codes. $20 on ebay and I now have a new CAN OBDII reader of my very own

The code I have is:
P0453 - Evaporative emission control system pressure sensor high input.

Any thoughts on the likely culprit? Can someone with a repair manual tell me if there is a check procedure for the solenoid valve that bakuro117 mentioned?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
