Question SES (Service Engine Soon) light came on...

I searched the forum, didn't see anything like what's happening to me. Had an oil change at the Mitsu dealer (went to get a recall fix) about 1,500 miles ago or about 2 months. My car has zero mods and I was happy to hit 40,000 miles yesterday with no issues. At about 40,010 miles as I'm on the freeway at about 60 mph on my normal commute, the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on. Not the 'routine maintenance required' followed by the warning triangle on the center info screen, but a yellow, rear-bulb lit message right below the 'cruise' light. It's been on ever since. I guess I'd be more concerned with a check engine light, but I'm not sure if I should just reset this, if that's even possible, or go to the dealer. The maintenance service countdown timer screen still shows 12,000 miles / 6 months to go, so that screen tells me I'm good but the yellow SES light right above it says differently. I'm confused. Any advice?

I should add this happened in dry, warm weather, this is my daily driver, I almost always drive for maximum mpg so it has had a very easy life so far, I am the first owner, and nothing unusual happened before, during or after the light came on. Car is driving just fine as far as I can tell, apart from that damned SES light!

IF you are under warranty - just take to dealer...

IF NOT - just swing by AutoZone and have them read it (and tell us what it is).

If the light is flashing you need to pull over and get it towed (usually means a misfire which could kill the cat converter $$$ :O )

Consider buying a CAN-BUS compliant code reader (< $100) I use mine all the time...

That makes sense. I will swing by the local O'Reilly and see if they can read it for me. Believe it or not, this is the first SES or CEL I've gotten in any of our family cars in about 20 years! But I will look into a CAN-BUS compliant code reader anyway. Light is not flashing, so I guess I'm ok for now. Thanks for the response, will update with code ASAP! Cheers.

Pep boys code reader says:

P0017 generic
Crankshaft position -
Camshaft position
Correlation - bank 1
Sensor B

Drove around the block a few times, let it idle for a while and the SES light did not come back on. Should I be relieved yet? Like I said before there is no obvious difference, but wtf do I know?

Thanks for the help!

BTW, no more free code reading in the parking lot is what the O'Reilly guy told me, and at Pep Boys I had to buy the reader for $185 which will be refunded if I bring it back within 5 days. So I can keep reading codes for friends and family all weekend!

Update: Drove to work, still no SES light.

Update!

SES light came back again, same P0017 code, took it to the dealer, they did a 'relearn', light turned off, when I started the car to leave it turned back on so they are ordering the parts to replace the timing chain, guides, etc.

Sound about right to you guys?

Hmmm thats weird they're going after mechanical right away when that code states a correlation between the cam and crank sensor is off....you'd expect to see that if you skipped a tooth or broke a chain, but you say its running fine right?

After five trips to the dealer in two weeks (once to reset/relearn, twice to drop off/pickup for new timing chain and twice to drop off/pickup due the massive oil leak I had after they installed timing chain), the light has not come back, car idles smoothly, drives smoothly, so far so good. KNOCK ON WOOD!

About 6 weeks after I got my car my SES light came on, took it to the dealer since I still had a few months left under warranty and found out I needed a new transmission. Keep in mind i bought the car with 28,476 miles on it. Got it back in about a week and has been good ever since.
