When I got my 2001 Eclipse the head gasket was blown in it as well. You can do a compression test to be sure, or like green bandit said check the oil see if it has white milky like stuff in it. That means water is getting into the oil.

And anything you feel like doing to the motor doing it while its all apart is a good idea. I replaced the head, had it ported and polished, new cam, new valvetrain, doing a balance shaft delete, making a light weight crank pulley, removed the power steering, and AC, and Im thinking about shaving the deck a bit but idk yet. In my mind if you have the time to work on it while its apart then go for it. If its your DD get it back together and save up money for something else, like a turbo... lol

I looked at the car today and before I can go any further I am going to have to change the Engine Harness. I don't know why it brunt up but it did. I must say I have no Idea what Mitsubishi was thinking when they made that harness. Has any body ever had that happen to them may that was the problem all a long. I checked my oil and still no signs of an head gasket problem. I will do a compression test once I change my harness I bet this is going to cost me.

post some pictures is it the engine control harness?...is it possible the wrong fuse of a higher amperage was installed where it should not have been? for the harness, depending on the damage, you should be able to repair it easily enough. a new engine control harness is more than $800. so salvage would be your best bet, if you search car-part.com there are a bunch for under $200, some yards even ship parts by courier. That could have been your problem the whole time...

I believe it is the engine control harness it go's all over the place. I called Mitsubishi parts.net and they said this harness is no longer available. I started taking it out before I called and I am going to put it back and try to repair. CrAnSwIcK what options did you use for carpart.com because I can't find the harness on there I looked yesterday. I have not changed a fuse in the car I have never had to and I am the original owner.

in the parts drop down...scroll all the way to the bottom, it's Wiring Harness/Misc. Electric. Look for control harness...make sure it's for the 2.4L, and they are transmission specific...not all the parts that come up are engine harnesses, but there are some.

can you post pics of the damage?

The cable is brunt up worst then I thought it was I would have rewire from the fire wall back to all the sensors on the motor. Does any body know where I can get supplies to make an custom harness. I am going to need some slielded cable too. I am going to post Pic's when I get home thanks.

why did the cable burn up is more important than repairing it.
